President Muhammadu Buhari won the 2015 presidential elections largely on account of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s mismanagement of the kidnap of Chibok Girls by Boko Haram insurgents and his reputation as a custodian of corruption.
And it was no surprise that those two elements worked against his re-election.
But three years into Buhari’s government, these two factors are still ravaging Nigeria.
And this week, it’s clear, from facts on the ground, that we are no better than we were before Jonathan was booted out when these two critical indices are examined.
With the kidnap of Dapchi Girls in Yobe by Boko Haram and Transparency International’s report that we are worse off on the corruption index, there’s cause for worry.
Here are more details about the two events this week that damaged President Muhammadu Buhari’s government as compiled by encomium.ng:
1. On Wednesday, February 21, 2018, Transparency International released its Corruption Perceptions Index 2017, with Nigeria at a woeful 148 position out of 180 countries.
With 0 representing ‘highly corrupt’ and 100 ‘very clean,’ Nigeria got 27 points. It was not far from what we have always scored (28 in 2016, 26 in 2015, 27 in 2014, 25 in 2013 and 27 in 2012).
The report is a stain on President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war.
Don’t forget, the same report was used by the opposition when President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was in power!
2. On Monday, February 19, 2018, terrorists stormed Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi in Yobe…and abducted yet to be determined number of girls.
While some reports claim 50, others listed 114 girls.
While about 40 girls have returned, the number of those still abducted is unclear.
This case is so similar to the kidnap of Chibok Girls on April 14, 2014. 276 girls were abducted with 154 escaping, released or found.
There are still 112 girls missing…
