2016 Glo-sponsored Ofala festival begins Saturday

Globacom, the major sponsor of Ofala festival has announced the commencement of 2016 edition of the age-long festival.

Globacom, in a statement in Lagos said, “the first Ofala Day as announced by the Obi of Onitsha will be Saturday, October 8 at the Ime Obi, stating that the Azu Ofala will take place on Sunday October 9.”

According to the company, an International Arts Exhibition, tagged Ora Eze (the king’s crowd), will precede this year’s festival which will be held between 3rd and 10th October. It will feature over 40 professional visual artists drawn from Ghana, Togo, Republic of Benin and the Diaspora who will display their works at the exhibition gallery located within the Ime Obi. Renowned artist and co-author of the seminal book “101 Contemporary Artists: A Celebration of Modern Nigerian Art”, George Edozie is serving as Curator.

The Obi of Onitsha, according to Globacom has approved that the Youth Carnival which normally runs on the first day of Ofala should be held on October 7, a day before the Ofala proper begins as part of the new features of the  festival celebrations.

“As it has been our tradition in the last five years, Globacom will stage a commemorative Ofala Royal Banquet at the Dolly Hills Hotels, Onitsha, on Tuesday, October 11. The banquet is in honour of the Royal Father and Onitsha Kingdom,” the company disclosed.

Globacom added that the Miss Ofala beauty pageant will also be held during a music carnival tagged Glo Music Concert, on the evening ofOctober 9 at the Justice Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Onitsha during which beautiful girls from Onitsha kingdom will contest for the crown.

The company assured the people of Onitsha that “both the music concert and the banquet will be memorable as we have engaged A-list artists such as Ikem Mazeli, Reekado Banks and Flavour to perform at the concert. Okey Bakassi will also be on hand to entertain guests at the banquet.”

Globacom added that it found it note-worthy that “for the past five years, we have partnered with the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, and the entire good people of Onitsha in the celebration of the revered Ofala Festival.”

Apart from Ofala of Onitsha, Globacom, the grandmasters of data sponsors numerous traditional festivals across the country. Ojude Oba is one of them and at the last celebration a month ago, the company set the city of Ijebu Ode agog with a unique sponsorship package where the sons and daughters of Ijebuland paid homage to their King, according to their age groups in a carnival-like setting.
