7 Bible chapters that frown at joblessness

The sermon of Redeemed Christian Church of God’s General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye advising young men and women about being careful in their choice of partners is still as relevant as ever.

On Tuesday, August 2, at the 64th convention of the church, he categorically admonished men not to marry a woman that cannot pray for an hour or cook. In the same vein, he enjoined ladies to shun men without work.

He stated, “Don’t marry a man who has no job. Before God gave Adam Eve, he gave him a job. He said this is the garden, keep it. So those who come to you and say sister, thus saith the lord, you are going to be the star in my firmament, ask him what is his job. If he tells you he is a contractor, ask him to show you evidence of all the contracts he has done because the contract he is talking about is you. He wants to live off you. Don’t be a fool. If he hasn’t got a steady income, don’t marry him. A man is to provide for the house and not the other way round. If he has no income, he should not marry. Those who do not work should not eat and if they can’t eat, they can’t even marry.”

And here are Bible passages that corroborate his view :

Genesis 2:15

15 – And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

1 Timothy 5:7-8

7- Give the people these instructions, so that no one may be open to blame.

8 – Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Colossians 3:23-25

23 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

24 – since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

25 – Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.

2 Timothy 2:6-7

6 – The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.

7 – Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

James 2: 14-18

14 – What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?

15 – If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16 – And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

17 – Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18 – Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

2 Thessalonians 3:6-12

6 – Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

7 – For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

8 – Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:

9 – Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an example unto you to follow us.

10 – For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 – For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

12 – Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

Proverbs 13:22

22 – A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

Proverbs 13:11

11- Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.
