Abike Dabiri-Erewa denies eyeing governorship – ‘I stepped down for fresh blood’

HON. Abike Kafayat Oluwatoyin Dabiri-Erewa, the House of Representatives member who has been representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency since 2003, has decided not to go for what would have been her fourth term in the National Assembly.

Abike Dabiri joined five other colleagues which includes Hon. Jumoke Okoya-Thomas, Hon. Monsuru Owolabi, Hon. Dauda Kako-Are, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat and Hon. Rafeequat Onabamiro to withdraw from the race.

She told us in this interview why she withdrew from the race.

seriously-doughnuts-ABIKE DABIRIWhy did you decide not to contest again?

After doing 12 years, I see no reason why you don’t have to allow somebody else the opportunity. I thank God for the honour and privilege to have served Ikorodu for 12 years.  For me, I am glad that I took that decision not to re-contest. I am one of the founding mothers of All Progressives Congress (APC), and I will work for the success of my party at the state and national level.

Was it a personal decision or your party leadership instructed you to do so?

It was a personal decision.

But there is the impression that in the legislature, high-ranking members make the legislative work easier because of their experience.

That is true but this was a personal decision.  There comes a time you need to take such decisions.  Though it was a tough decision, one just has to take it.  I spoke with my family and some few close friends before taking the decision.

What are you going to do next?

I am a member of APC.  Like I said, I can claim to be one of the founding mothers of APC.  So, I will work for the success of my party at the state and national level.

But there is this rumour that you are going to be part of the next executive council in the state?

I wouldn’t know.  I have not heard that rumour.  I think the challenge ahead of us is to win our elections with a landslide.  After this, we can be talking about any other thing.  But the challenge now is to win our elections fair and square.

What do you think your chances are in winning the next election in the state?

Victory is certain, Insha Allah.
