After 16 years, Nigerians demand more dividends of democracy (4)

Not satisfied with what they got after 16 years of democratic rule, Nigerians are asking for dividends of democracy from the new administration.

Expressing their views with our reporters, many decried the poor state of infrastructure, poverty, corruption, among other woes troubling the nation.

‘NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT’ – Tunde Olaifa

There is nothing to show for it, only the fact that military is not in power that is all. No light, basic infrastructure, no fuel. What are we talking about.

‘NOTHING LIKE DIVIDEND OF DEMOCRACY’ – Opeyemi Onifade

There is nothing like dividend of democracy. We were better off when the military was in power, light was not this bad, fuel was not as expensive, the economy was okay. Just when democratic government took over, things turned upside down.

‘WE ONLY HOPE FOR CHANGE – Joyce Ikpe

Nigerian government is nothing to write home about, we need a more serious minded government. It is very hard to say what we have enjoyed from the previous leaders because it has been corruption so far, we only hope for change from the present government.

‘NIGERIANS DESERVE BETTER’ – Owolabi Sakariyau

I believe 16 years is enough to determine whether we Nigerians are enjoying the fruits of democracy. Left to me, all the components of good governance are not really felt. Every sector is constantly begging for attention. We can’t boast of anything at all.

Our education, health and every other sector has been in shambles since 1999 till date. The state of our infrastructure is nothing to write home about, even the roads. Nigerians deserve better treatment from our government in terms of dividends of democracy and I hope this present administration will rekindle our hope in that direction.

‘WE HOPE FOR THE BEST’ – Abel Odigie

We can’t rule out the fact that the previous administrations since 1999 didn’t do well in the areas that would have affected the lives of the poor masses of this country but still they tried in some areas, especially road construction and rehabilitation which could be noticed across the country.

Also, Jonathan’s administration empowered the youth just as the Obasanjo-led government also did. Even, during the OBJ regime, there was diversification of Nigerian economy and our foreign reserve was better. Jonathan also performed fairly well but failed woefully in the power and oil sectors which touch the average Nigerian directly. We’re hoping that Nigerians would enjoy better and more dividends of democracy now that we’re in a change era.

‘WE’VE NOT FARED BADLY’ – Pastor Gaius Kalu

It is true we have not lived up to global expectation, but I think we’ve made some level of progress. We have not fared badly. I hope things will get better under President Buhari.

‘WE DON’T HAVE DEMOCRACY HERE’ – Fred Iwenjora

It doesn’t appear we have democracy in Nigeria. What with the massive manipulation of people’s votes since 1999.

True democracy would be enthroned when the people have a say in the affair of the country.

‘WE HAVE MADE SOME PROGRESS’ – Tolu Akande

I can’t say we have really enjoyed the dividends of our democracy per se. But we have made some progress compared to the regimes of Abacha and Babangida. For me, the major difference is that the president in a democracy cannot wake up one morning and do whatever he likes. He doesn’t have such power. In terms of development, we are so behind the originators of democracy.

Hopefully, this new government will change things like they said.

‘IT’S THE BEST FORM OF GOVERNMENT’ – Bello Kadiri

Democracy, of course, is the best form of government for any country that wants to move forward. Take a look at the countries that make up the G7. Is there any non-democratic one among them? That would tell us something.  It is very pro-development. Only that in our own case we’ve had thieves and no-vision leaders.

‘WE’VE ENJOYED NOTHING’ – Joke Ikpe

Nigerians government is nothing to write home about. We need a serious minded government. It is very hard to say what we enjoyed from the previous governments starting from Obasanjo to Goodluck Jonathan. It has been corruption all the way. We only hope for change in Buhari’s regime.
