After 16 years, Nigerians demand more dividends of democracy (5)

Not satisfied with what they got after 16 years of democratic rule, Nigerians are asking for dividends of democracy from the new administration.

Expressing their views with our reporters, many decried the poor state of infrastructure, poverty, corruption, among other woes troubling the nation.

‘DEMOCRACY DIVIDENDS HAVE ELUDED US’ – Hon. Mike Ehiazeu

It’s unfortunate we have not really enjoyed the so-called dividends of democracy 16 years on. All we need to do now is to rally behind the Buhari regime to move Nigeria forward.

‘OUR DEMOCRACY IS NOT THE PROBLEM, REALLY’ – Ola Akindele

Our democracy is not the problem, really. We just have very bad individuals manning the affairs of this country. Remember that it is this same democracy that the developed countries are practicing, so why is our case different?

That should tell you something. Look at Libya, for instance, with only one leader for a many years. They made real progress whereas we have had three presidents and we are still behind them in terms of development. The problem is our people, Nigerians are the problem of Nigeria.

‘WE’VE NOT DONE AS BAD AS SOME MAKE IT OUT TO BE’ – Temitola Adejole

We’ve not done as bad as some make it out to be, frankly speaking. We have made some progress, significant ones, especially in terms of the awareness of the populace. At least, we have had many political parties spring up to provide real opposition to any ruling government.

During the military era, most of us were not even aware of our basic political rights, but it is different now. That’s a plus.

‘WE NEED GOOD ROADS AND SOUND EDUCATION AT ALL LEVELS’ – Lawan Shuab

I believe the previous administration might have done their best but it’s only that their best has not satisfied us. Nigerians truly deserve more than what we’re experiencing today. We need good roads and sound education at all levels.

Also, there is need to reduce the poverty level which all the previous administrations embarked upon but no huge success has ever been recorded. I believe with what this Buhari-led administration stands for, we will surely enjoy true dividends of democracy. He has even demonstrated that in the past few days. Very soon, one of our oil refineries will start working. If that’s achieved, it’s a plus to the administration.

‘THE ECONOMY IS CRIPPLED, INSECURITY ALL OVER THE PLACE’ – Mary Opeoluwa

Left to me, I can’t say we have enjoyed any dividend of democracy at all. The reason is that nothing has been put in place for the benefit of the poor masses who are the majority. Only about 10 percent of the population that have been controlling this country since independence are still the ones rolling from fortune to fortune, getting bigger.

Education and health sectors had collapsed for a long time and was worsened by the immediate past administration. We can’t enjoy good roads, uninterrupted power supply and abundant fuel across the country and lot more.

The economy is crippled, insecurity all over the place. So, what have we enjoyed collectively as a people in the last 16 years? It’s virtually nothing.

‘BUHARI SHOULD SAVE NIGERIA’ – Clement Nwamgburuka

It would be wrong to say we have not benefitted from democracy, but a lot more need to be done especially in the area of stemming corruption. This is the area we want President Buhari to save us.

‘WE ARE NOT ENJOYING ANYTHING’ – Adewale Adegoke

We are not enjoying anything. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The fact that it is no longer military ruling, that is just it.

‘ALL IS ZERO’ – Abidemi Olatinuke

It is just written in pen and paper, we are not enjoying anything. Maybe?
