Agbani Darego itemizes secret of her look at 30

+ Opens AD showroom in Lagos

‘It’ll be a shame if I don’t take care of the body God has given me’

The dream of former MBGN and the first black woman to win the prestigious Miss World 2001, Agbani Darego has come true with the official launching of her denim line, AD by Agbani Darego.

The ex-beauty queen, who recently celebrated 30, was full of joy on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 when her friends stormed her Lekki, Lagos showroom to rejoice with her. She was elated to speak with ENCOMIUM Weekly about her clothing line, the secret of her successful look, amongst others…

1-IMG_4834Congrats on the success of the unveiling. How does it feel?

It feels great seeing my dream come true. It is really something I have worked hard for and finally, it’s here. I am thankful to God that it came to success, and I can’t wait to start having people around.

When exactly did you conceive the idea?

September last year.

What inspired the decision to go into fashion?

I have been working on different concept of lines before I decided to go into denim line because when I graduated from college, and I wanted to do something else, I asked myself what was next for Agbani? So, I chose fashion because it is one of the things I wanted to do. I wanted something the masses could wear, at the same time, something profitable. I wanted something that will be comfortable for young girls.

I noticed your products are named after Nigerian women. Why?

True. The products are named after Nigerian woman. The jeans come in four styles – Bola  Trouser Leg, Aisha  Classic Cut, Ify  Boyfriend Jeans, Nosa  Skinny Jeans, amongst others. I did it that way because I am a Nigerian. I create my products for Nigerian women. Although, the concept started in Nigeria, my fans are across Africa and beyond. So, I put them into consideration when I created them. I studied their shapes to make their kind of designs.

Do you design yourself?

Yes, I do and I also have a team of designers I work with. However, the concepts are all mine. The sketches are mine. They just fine-tune what I have created.

1-IMG_4887What inspires your creativity?

I believe I have grown in the industry. I have been in the industry for over a decade. I have been exposed to different things at the international level. So, it’ll be sad if I haven’t picked or learnt from all the people I have worked with for a while. Besides, I am a creative person, and this is the time I should use my creativity.

How much did it cost you to put this place together?

I am not going to do that but since it’s my project, you should know that I can do anything I want to do to expand my brands.

You’re mostly abroad. How do you intend to run your business in Lagos?

I am in Nigeria for now. But, if I am not around, I have people around me.

Let’s talk about beauty. What’s the success of your look, you still looking as slim as ever?

I want to believe it is God. Of course, I make an effort to eat healthy. I try to work out, I am a big fan of yoga, I do cardio when I am calm. I am also lucky to have come from a family I came from. All I do now is to be taking care of what God has given me – my body in particular – and it’ll be a shame if I don’t take care of it.

You clocked 30 a couple of months back. How does it feel to be 30?

It feels great. I feel like I am mature woman now. I am no longer a child. I am happy to be 30 (smiles).

1-IMG_4837When is Agbani getting married?

Waiting for God’s time.

Who is your ideal man?

You’re one of the famous people on earth. You’re young and have achieved great things at your age. How did you do it?

I believe it’s God, I am just privileged, honoured to have got this opportunity. Yes, I have worked hard a lot and at the end of the day, my people (fans) supported me, and made me what I am today. First as the MBGN and then, the first black to emerge the most beautiful girl in the world. I was able to achieve all these because I have good people around me. It’s an honour and I am privilege and grateful to God.
