Aisha Buhari is not involved in Halliburton scandal – US clarifies

Contrary to the allegations of Ekiti governor Ayodele Fayose that the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari (Aisha) was involved in the inglorious Halliburton bribery scandal, the government of United States of America has clarified that it has no fraud case against her.

In a short response to Punch newspaper’s enquiry, Frank Selin, the acting Public Affairs Officer of US Consulate General, Lagos, said: “We have no information to provide on this matter”.

Mrs. Buhari who was rumoured to have been avoiding visiting the United States because of the issue, was accused by Fayose of sending $170,000 to one of the convicted felons in the scandal.

Fayose’s allegation, which may become a subject of a libel suit, mentioned Mrs Buhari. He alleged at the beginning of his travails with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission when his accounts with Zenith Bank were frozen :

“Even the President cannot claim to be an angel. The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted in the Halliburton scandal. When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on Page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialise the judgment for people to see and read”.

Following the accusations, the lawyers of Mrs. Buhari gave Fayose a few days to retract the allegations and apologize. He never did.

Now, the statement attributed to the United States government did not entirely address the issue raised. More clarification is needed to put paid to the allegations.
