An Afternoon of Tributes for Buchi Emecheta

Dear Friend,

The Committee For Relevant Art (CORA) is delighted to invite you to an afternoon of tributes, readings and discussions around the works of Buchi Emecheta the Nigerian author of The Bride Price and other novels.

The event is scheduled for Saturday March 25, at Terra Kulture. The time is 1pm. Ms. Emecheta, was a pioneering female Nigerian novelist who had lived in the UK since 1960. She died in late January 2017. With Second Class Citizen published as far back as 1976, this trailblazing writer had broached a subject that would later be generally described as Diaspora literature.

Among the panel of speakers at the tribute are Sefi Atta, Molara Wood, Margaret Busby, (who was Buchi’s publisher), Chika Unigwe and Sarah Ladipo Manyika.  Sylvester Onwordi, Emecheta’s son who published a very moving tribute to her in the New Statesman, is flying in from London to take part in the event. The working subject of the conversation is that, even she has passed, her work continues in the works of several Nigerian female writers who have taken her concerns even farther.

Conveners: Ike Oguine, CORA.

Signed: Jahman Anikulapo
