ANXIETY MOUNTS AS POLICE HUNT KILLERS OF IYALOJA OF IJEBULAND

Controversies have continued to trail the gruesome murder of Iyaloja of Ijebuland, Alhaja Halimat-Shadia Kareem, prominently known in the Ogun social circle as Alhaja Elewuju, just as reports filtered in that undercover policemen are digging into several angles which could have led to her death.

ENCOMIUM Weekly investigations have it that chief among the theory which police are working on was the alleged rivalry within the leadership of the market union.

It was gathered that there was an age-long rivalry within the union, and late Alhaja Elewuju, as a no-nonsense woman, may have stepped on toes of some powerful clique.

Sources said some people have already been invited for questioning, including the deceased’s househelp.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the state, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who spoke to ENCOMIUM Weekly on Sunday, July 12, 2015, disclosed that police are widening their scope in unraveling the mysteries behind the murder.

“You know, in line with our constitutional provision, we must be able to do our findings thoroughly and thereafter have credible evidence before any suspect is picked up. This is a case of murder; we must not be in a hurry to do our work.

“But I can promise you that we will get to the bottom of the case and expose faces behind the murder”, Adejobi said.

The Police PPRO further hinted that investigations won’t be limited to the market alone, as other areas will be explored to find the killers.

As a result of the new development, it was scooped that palpable fear has gripped some of the leaders in the market who had issue with the deceased. Some of them, sources said may have even gone underground.

It would be recalled that Alhaja Elewuju was attacked at 4pm on Wednesday (July 8), when assailants invaded her home, shooting and also inflicted severe cuts on her before leaving the octogenarian in a pool of her blood.

The assailants, sources said, struck when her male workers went to the market to buy food items for entertainment of guests.

It was gathered that she was first taken to a nearby private hospital on the Ijebu – Ode – Ore Expressway, then the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOU), Sagamu and to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos where she breathed her last.

Tears flowed as hundreds of traders from the six local governments in Ijebuland gathered for the funeral of the slain Iyaloja of Ijebuland, Alhaja Halimat-Shadia Kareem.

Alhaja Elewuju, who was installed the Iyaloja of Ijebuland by the Paramount ruler and Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, in 2002, was committed to mother earth at 4pm.

Mourners and sympathisers, who thronged her Itorin-Sabo home to receive her remains, cursed her killers.

Some threw themselves on the ground as the hearse, bearing her body drapped in white, pulled up at her home at noon.

Many bemoaned the killing of the 82-year-woman, who was described as bold, courageous and upright.

Security agents had a hectic time controlling sympathizers, who kept wailing and cursing the murderers.

The Police in Ijebu – Ode and detectives from the Igbeba Police Area Command have since swung into action to unravel the circumstances and motives behind her gruesome attack.
