APC chieftains laud Ambode over construction of 114 LG roads

Some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for the initiative to construct 114 roads in all the 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), saying the project would go a long way in bringing succor to motorists in the state.

The road project, which was flagged off last week, is expected to be completed in the next six months, and would gulp N17.5 billion. The roads were designed to accommodate street lights, walkways and drainages.

Reacting to the development, Director of Publicity of APC in South West, Ayo Afolabi commended Governor Ambode for the initiate to massively develop the nook and cranny of the State.

Afolabi said the government came up with the concept with a view to ensuring that the people at the Local Government, who are the closest to government, also enjoy the dividend of democracy.

He said: “Basically, what the government has done is to make sure that no Local Government is left untouched in terms of infrastructural development. So, in line with that, the Governor has made provision for the construction of two roads in each Local Government areas of the state. This will ensure that every local government will have the opportunity of enjoying infrastructural development”.

He, however, advocated the need for a strict supervision to be put in place to ensure that the job is carried out according to specification.

On his part, Chief Funsho Ologunde, Vice Chairman, Lagos West of APC, said the project was an innovative approach to development of the State by the Governor expressing optimism that when completed, it would impact positively on the socio-economic wellbeing of the State.

Ologunde said: “With 114 roads being worked upon and reconstructed by the 57 councils at the same time and when added to what the State Government is doing, it means at the end of the day we will have about 200 roads being worked upon simultaneously by the two tiers of government in Lagos State.

“That is going to bring a very big relief to motorists in Lagos State and by the time that one is over and another set is embarked upon, you can imagine the multiplier effect on the happiness of Lagosians, on the development on business activities in Lagos State and generally motorists are also going to feel a lot of relief because the breakdown associated with bad road will have been severely dealt with.”

Also, Kanayo Osondu, Chairman Igbo United Political Coalition in APC, said the development was a fulfillment of Governor Ambode’s campaign promise.

He said: “I remember vividly that during the campaign, Governor Ambode promised to fix 20 inner roads per year in each Local Government and we have started with two in each of the 57 councils in the State totaling 114.

“Let’s start from somewhere knowing what the economic situation in the country is right now. Well, we have started from somewhere and by the time we get to the middle of the year, I know that by that time if the Governor has more funds, he will do more,” Osondu said.
