After ethical approval granted for a clinical trial, the first UK womb transfer is on its way! The transplant will be done on 10 women.
The go-ahead was given after a successful transplant following the birth of a baby boy in Sweden last year.
Out of 300 women who have approached the transplant team headed by consultant gynaecologist, Richard Smith, 104 have been identified as potential recipients of donor wombs.
Dr. Smith, who works for Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital said, “Surrogacy is an option but it does not answer the deep desire that women have to carry their own baby. For a woman to carry her own baby – that has to be a wonderful thing.”
The criteria to be chosen include having a long-term partner and being under the age of 38.
