Azadus, My Lagos, ‘The only time I hate Lagos is when I’m broke’

Born into the notoriety of Ajegunle, the Kennis Music vocalist is at home with the characteristic chaos of Lagos. And of course, the Niteshift Coliseum.

Where do you live in Lagos and why?

I live in Festac Town because I’ve always lived there.

Where did you grow up?

I was told I was born in Ajegunle. Where in Ajegunle, I don’t know. But I was born in AJ before we moved to Festac.

What’s your earliest Lagos experience?

Buying Limca and Gold Spot for 15 kobo. I remember Lagos used to be very clean and not as congested.

What do you like about Lagos?

The stupidity. The craziness. The foolishness, arrant nonsense that happens that you can’t see elsewhere. You can just wake up and see two people fighting, or you see bus drivers threatening a bank manager in his car. I love that.

What do you hate about Lagos?

Nothing. I love everything about Lagos. Lagos is a very fine place to spend money. The only time I hate Lagos is when I’m broke because you’ll see oppressors. But when I have money, I’ll oppress those that don’t have.

What do you miss when you’re outside Lagos?

I miss all those things I like about Lagos.

How do you move around Lagos?

I drive my car, a BMW 5 Series. But those Def’ O clan days, one used to jump buses and all that until God answer man prayer.

Where do you shop in Lagos?

That will be a promo for them and they don’t give me concession. And I’ve been warning them since. Now you see? But seriously, I’m a carefree person. I buy things I like wherever I see them. It doesn’t matter where. I’m a gentleman. It’s the bankers and their types that do all that. Colognes and the stuff.

What are your hobbies?

Thinking. I take myself out of this world, to the heavens and think, it’s a kind of spiritual trip for me. You know I attended a white garment church (Cherubim and Seraphim).

What new projects are you working on?

Presently, I’m working on a new album. It should be released anytime soon. Some real tight stuff. I envisage it’ll be released by May. But man proposes, God disposes. There are tracks like, ‘If u love me, ‘Ur hands in the air, From dusk to dawn, Victory is mine, I am that and others.”
