Being in a bad marriage ‘increases risk of heart disease’ – study

Being in a bad marriage, literally, breaks your heart, as it increases the risk of heart disease, scientists believe.

A study, by researchers from Michigan State University, United States of America found that people who have experienced decades of conflict with their spouse are more likely to develop heart disease than those in good marriages.

Sociologist Hui Lui, from the university said: “Marriage counseling is focused largely on younger couples. But these results show that marital quality is just as important at older ages, even when the couple has been married 40 or 50 years”.
