Doctors in the United Kingdom (UK) have been put on alert to spot symptoms of the deadly Ebola disease – which has claimed the lives of nearly 700 people in West Africa – in what is now the largest outbreak in history.
British Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond said that it is “most unlikely” that Ebola could spread within the UK, but “precautionary measures” have been put in place.
He was speaking after a meeting of the Government’s emergency committee, Cobra, to discuss what he earlier called a “new and emerging” threat.
The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had earlier said that they regard the disease as a “very serious threat”.
Ebola infection results from direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids and tissues of infected animals or persons, and there is no cure for the disease which kills 6 out of 10 of its victims.
