Doctors in the United Kingdom where veteran actor and broadcaster Sadiq Daba has undergone series of tests assured him that he’s likely to recover fully from leukaemia and prostate cancer.
The 67-year-old Kano indigene raised in Sierra Leone told one of his friends the good news on Saturday, December 16, 2017.
First diagnosed with leukaemia, Sadiq Daba, more popularly known as Bitrus from his role in Cock Crow at Dawn in the 80s, was later told that he has prostate cancer.
Distraught and bedridden, friends began to solicit for funds on his behalf – and raised more than N14 million in weeks.
The donations led to his seeking Medicare in the United Kingdom.
He arrived London on the morning of Monday, December 4 – and following tests at a few leading hospitals, he was assured of full recovery.
He told Azuka Jebose on Saturday, December 16:
“Azuka, morning o! (well, it’s morning here in London), how you dey my brother? Before I start with you, please help me tell Nigerians that I am profoundly grateful for giving me hope to live again. Nigerians saved my life: my family and I remain eternally grateful.
Done with the Doctors this week. All the test results for my prostate cancer did not find spread. I was told in Nigeria that it had spread to other organs of my body. But all tests here by Specialists came back negative, with regards to the spread. It can be treated with drugs and injections. Also, the doctors, after tests for Leukemia, concluded that it is in remission. The Specialists placed me on drugs to help with the remission. I will see an oncologist on Monday; no need for an operation(surgery) to open me up. In Nigeria, I was told I needed surgery. My brother na wa o. I am feeling like a sweepstakes winner. These treatments are very expensive sha. Where I forget the money?. Na God send you, Soni Irabor, DrJoe Okei Odumakin and compassionate Nigerians to me o. Doctors placed me, effective immediately, on hormone treatments; Azuka, can you believe that?: no spread found….your prayers WORKED!!! Will be here for another two weeks for observation and then head home to recuperate!!!!. Azuka, I feel spectacular. Shebi you hear my voice. God Bless Nigerians for this gift of life. Abeg help me thank them. I will live. My wife has been dancing non-stop o. I go call you again on Monday”.
And Jebose replied:”Sadiq my brother, the power of the people is the power of God. Continue to lively up your health. Monday is moments away. We wait, excitedly.”
And Nigerians are exhilarated that the thespian who won Best Actor trophy for October 1 at the Africa Movies Academy Awards in 2015 will fully recover.
Prayers of thanksgiving have dominated the social media as the good news spread.
The life-threatening ailments ravaged Sadiq Daba’s frame, but he was always hopeful and positive. As friends and former colleagues visited, he kept us all abreast of those who provided succour.
His Facebook page became a platform where all the information about his ailments could be followed.
And as he was persuaded to go public and seek donations, hundreds quickly jumped in.
With his UBA account announced ( ), and a gofundme appeal launched, social media cued in to popularise the appeal.
And big donors appeared, with Chief Martins and his friend dropping N10 million, Aeroland’s Segun Adewale donated N1 million and Senator Dino Melaye also gave N1 million.
