Buhari’s sickness: Adesina should apologise for deception

Barely 24 hours after telling over 250 million Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari was ‘hale and hearty’, the Special Adviser to the President on media and publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina suffered an egg in the face moment when he had to announce that Buhari was seeking medical attention abroad.

While featuring on a live programme titled ‘Politics Today’ on Channels Television on Saturday, Mr. Adesina was forced to address the increasing public concerns about the current health of the President. Rather than admit that the President was indeed ill and was receiving treatment at the Villa, he said he was hale and hearty.

“Well, that issue does not arise. The question ‘is he (president) Ok”, does not arise. He has always been Ok. Nothing is wrong with him. Yes, we are in a democracy particular presidential democracy. The president can always devolve duties to his deputy who is the vice president. That’s what the president has done. But in terms of his health, the president is fine”, he said.

But his attempted deception didn’t last a day as he was forced to do a press release to the effect that the president was suffering from a lingering ear problem which required specialist attention abroad after Nigerian specialists have treated him.

“During the holiday, he will see an E.N.T Specialist for a persistent ear infection. The President was examined by his Personal Physician and an E.N.T Specialist in Abuja, and was treated. Both Nigerian doctors recommended further evaluation purely as a precaution.”

As much as Nigerians have been wishing the president a speedy recovery on social media, many still feel ‘lied to’ by Adesina for telling them Buhari was fine when he obviously wasn’t.

In English language, a person is described as hale when he is ‘Free from infirmity or illness’.
