Burkina Faso president resigns, army chief takes over

Burkina Faso’s president, Blaise Campaore, following series of violent protests by tens of thousands of people against his 27-year rule, has resigned.

Campaore announced his resignation in a statement today (Friday, October 31), and called for a 90-day transition to “free and transparent” elections in the country.

Crowds danced and cheered in the capital (Ougadougou) after Compaore’s statement was broadcast. The mood cooled, however, when it became plain that military chief, General Honore Traore had taken over the reins of power.
