The outbreak of Ebola virus in Nigeria has had an adverse effect on socio-economic activities. Nigerians are scared of patronizing hospitals, restaurants, public toilets, etc.
ENCOMIUM Weekly sampled the opinion of restaurant owners about the effect of Ebola on their business.

OLANREWAJU SAHEED OLATUNJI, De Royal Meals
How will you say the Ebola outbreak has affected patronage of customers?
We have been experiencing some difficulties in terms of sales. The first reason is money exchange. Because we do food business which involves money exchange, customers are afraid of to patronizing us with these. I can deduce that Ebola has reduced patronage.
How will you measure your business before and after the Ebola outbreak?
There is a difference. I can say things used to be better than now in terms of patronage.
What preventive measures are you taking?
We use sanitizers and I tell my staff to move around with sanitizers because we collect money outside and also I downloaded a memorandum about Ebola which is shared to my staff.

TAIWO BAKARE, Madef Kitchen
The outbreak has not affected our sales in anyway. The preventive measure we have taken is ensuring that all our food are well cooked, the cooking staff are always clean, the environment is neat, cooking utensils and serving plates are thoroughly washed and cleaned. Finally, we have sanitizers in all wash hand basins.

BLESSING GODWIN, Anuegbe Restaurant
How will you say the Ebola outbreak has affected patronage of customers?
Ever since the Ebola outbreak, I can say customers don’t come the way they used to. But we try as much as possible to maintain our customers by making sure that our food is properly served in a neat matter.
How will you measure your business before and after the Ebola outbreak?
In fact, there is a big difference but we still try to maintain our customers.

We wash our hands frequently and we use salt and water to wash our plates.

ETAFOR FOLASHADE, Melchalon Restaurant
How will you say the Ebola outbreak has affected patronage of customers?
People are conscious of what they eat. As a matter of fact, it has affected meat. People no longer eat meat, rather they go for fish and some customers come with their sanitizer. Also, most people don’t buy food in plates again, they buy take-away packs which we have in various sizes. People are getting scared because of what the media is saying concerning this deadly disease.
How will you measure your business before and after the Ebola outbreak?
There is a big difference. People are eating at home now, rather than patronizing us.
What preventive measures are you taking?
I tell my customers to buy take-away packs and I encourage them to wash their hands before and after eating. That also applies to my staff.

FLOURISH IKEJIMI, Sky Blue Restaurant

Before the Ebola outbreak business was okay. But since the outbreak, customers do not patronize us. This week, business is moving back to shape because it has been heard that there is a solution to the disease now. The Ebola outbreak really affected a lot of things in general. Because of the disease, school resumption date has been moved.
How will you measure your business before and after the Ebola outbreak?
Business used to be okay before the Ebola outbreak but since the disease was announced on air to have been in Nigeria, customers are keeping to themselves, trying to be careful.
