Carrots and potatoes prevent dementia

A new study revealed that adults that eat carrots and sweet potatoes regularly could avoid dementia.  Dementia is a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life.

Scientists also say that those who had lower levels of caroteniods in their system rely on more brain power to accomplish memory-oriented tasks. Carotenoids, which is found in series of colourful vegetables, improve reasoning ability.

A group of researchers from the University of Georgia, USA, found that people with high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin (two important eye nutrients) didn’t need much brain activity to complete a task.  While those with low levels of these nutrients needed more brain power to complete a task.

According to the lead researcher, Cutter Lindbergh, “There’s a natural deterioration process that occurs in the brain as people age, but the brain is great at compensating for that. One way it compensates is by calling on more brain power to get a job done so it can maintain the same level of cognitive performance.”

Researchers concluded that eating carrots lowers the risk of breast cancer by up to 60 percent because of their carotene. Lutein and zeaxanthin (both found in carrot and sweet potatoes) boosts one’s sight by reducing cataracts and memory loss in adults.
