CELEBRATING FELA 20 YEARS AFTER: Fela ignored AIDS

THROUGHOUT the last years of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, he acted as if the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (which still has no cure) did not exist. The artiste even derided the use of condom in one of his last compositions, Condom Scallywag and Scatter.

In the song, he wondered why anyone would go through the length of removing all his clothes, and later ‘wearing’ condom.

The life of the musician itself is an exhibit of in-discriminate sex in unimaginable excess.

Many times, he told reporters that he could have sex several times in a day, and the legend of his sexual prowess is common place. Many of the ladies who are in Kalakuta Republic (at 7, Gbemisola Street, Ikeja, Lagos) were his sexual partners. Some of them even usually boasted about how much they enjoyed Fela’s lovemaking.

The musician, in his lifetime, even had a joke for lovemaking. He called it bend-bend sleep. Whenever he’s making love, he called it ‘bend-bend’ sleep.

Insatiable could adequately describe Fela’s obsession with sex. He had girl friends at random. And because of his popularity, women flocked to him in dozens.

So, when the announcement that the African icon died of complications arising from AIDS on Saturday, August 2, 1997, at about 5.30 p.m at Victoria Island Consultancy and Hospital Services Ltd. (on Ligali Ayorinde at Victoria Island, Lagos), many were in shock. That more than dozens of people are in danger of following suit.

Apart from the first 10 years of his life which he spent with the mother of Femi, Yeni and Sola (1963 and 1973), he had two many women fans. And ever since he didn’t look back.
