OLANREWAJU Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan, is 12 years in the music industry. He is rolling out the drums to celebrate it in a couple of weeks at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. ENCOMIUM Weekly had a chat with him about his journey in the music industry and much more.
Congratulations on the forthcoming celebration of your 12th year on stage?
12 years on stage is not a joke, what has taken you this far?
It is just God, hard work. We thank God for good health, energy and everything. Many started with me but are not there today. God has kept me and my music.
How does it feel coming this far?
It feels good, it feels nice. I am trying to put up a strategy for the years ahead.
What has been your impact in the music industry, what have you contributed to the industry?
I will let that come from others. I cannot blow my trumpet; I don’t think I am in the best position to do that, let it come from my fans.
How will you describe your experience in totality since you started out?
We thank God, though it has been challenging, but every dream I had at the beginning has come to reality. I am accepted worldwide, it has been wonderful.
How challenging has it been?
There were many challenges, when we started, people didn’t like Nigerian music. It was not easy, the acceptance wasn’t there, so we had to work on the music so that it could be relevant. It was really tough for us, but God helped us out.
What master plan did you set out to achieve 12 years ago?
I wouldn’t say there was any blueprint or master plan. Everything I wanted to do was working against time, I had to make sure I was out there and accepted first. I thank God for the journey any way.
Now that you are married and you have started raising your own family, what has changed in your life and career?
Marriage is a blessing, you cannot complain. I achieved more when I got married. My family is a good reason for me to keep on working because I have to take good care of them. Marriage is a plus, I don’t think any reasonable man will relent in his effort because he has a family to cater for.
It’s like your music is assuming another dimension, some people say you sing highlife while others say you sing R n’ B, what informed the new dimension?
There is no new dimension, you cannot predict my song because I am a versatile artist. I re-invent my music, I have written over a 100 songs, I don’t have a restricted genre of music.
How many albums do you have to your credit and which gives you maximum satisfaction?
I have five albums. Even before I started, I had written about a 100 songs. This celebration will herald my sixth album.
12 years is not a landmark, why are you celebrating it?
The celebration is not for some people, but for me, I am happy. I know my story, what I have gone through, anybody that is happy with me will celebrate with me.
How are you celebrating?
I will be having a concert, we will celebrate showing people how God has been faithful. I believe if you see tomorrow you must celebrate, not to talk of 12 years.
What is the next step now?
We are working, still working. We also hope to continue producing good music that people will enjoy and appreciate. We will continue to look up to God for inspiration and substance.
