Yesterday (Tuesday, March 15, 2016) members of the senate voted against the Gender Equality in Marriage bill which was sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi.
A lot of Nigerians and celebrities have aired their views on the issue, and scores are very bitter at the senators for refusing to vote the bill for second reading.
Encomium.ng brings to you the some of the opinions and views of celebrities on the Gender Equality issue.
The Nigerian senate has rejected the GENDER AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY BILL at the second reading. This is totally unacceptable and if every African woman cannot rise up to fight for their rights and the rights of their daughters, then why should anyone listen or care? If we cannot scream for the world to know what they are doing to us then what’s the point? If we cannot go to every government representative to show them how unacceptable it is then why should we even talk about it? If every woman who is a mother, wife, sister, aunt or even neighbour to any senator, governor, minister etc., cannot speak to them about this, then let’s all go to bed. Enough is enough. I am tired of seeing the same people fight for the rights of women and children, risking their lives everyday while others act like they don’t know what’s going on. They would rather post stupid pictures of their designer outfits and their shopping sprees. If we as women who are affected cannot put our differences aside to stand together to fight this, then what is the point.
After yesterday’s news on gender equality and the senate, I feel compelled to talk about what exactly the problem is. The problem is not that women want to take over from men.
Gender equality is not about bashing men or shouting that a woman is better than a man. It’s about the acknowledgement of the potential and contributions of women and the legal support and creation of opportunities for women to maximise their potentials in the same way men are allowed to. It is nothing to be terrified about, it is something to be cheered. We are all products of strong amazing women who have contributed in the most crucial ways to whomever we are today. Women are our supporters, our teachers. A woman should be given the opportunity to be whatever she wants to be. It is not too much to ask. Don’t forget we are in this together to bring out the best of each other #5050
Read through the Gender Equality bill (2011/2016).These are basic rights! Equal opportunies for men and women. Let’s get this off the way “women Empowerment is not a threat senators’ anything done to assist the Nigerian woman is done to assist Nigeria simple. How can you reject Gender equality bill? Every senator that voted against the bill should hide in shame and the annoying part is the excuses they are giving as to why the bill is thrown out this second time. FYI there are only 8 women in the 109member Nigeria senate. It is amazing what women can do when we come together. Our voices must be heard. Download the bill online read and education yourself then speak out (2011 version and 2016 version).
One of these days, we will be accorded the dignity we deserve. They’re afraid of what we’re capable of. Scared of our brilliace . Terrified of the strength of our minds. This will not stop us or hold us back. One of these days. They will have no choice.
This is really sad. I do pray that the senate and our leaders would do the right thing and protect our little girls.
This is unacceptable and I speak out against it too. The senate should do better for Girls and women of Nigeria. Also Gender Equality is not about women being better than men or whatever ways people try to confuse these two words, for men and women and a big NO to the discrimination of women. Praying that the bill woild be attended to fairly and properly. #GirlNotBride #LetThem Be Girls #OnlyWomenGetMarriedNotGirls #GenderEqualityIsAGoodThing #5050
This is one of the many parts of the bill that many senators disagreed with. Can we please have a leader who will speak out against pedophilia and the other evils women have to face in the country? Can we have young people who will let the government know that what happened yesterday in unacceptable? The young people in Nigeria get more turned on by frivolous social media beef than REAL issues. God help us al.
Why aren’t men speaking up for gender equality??? Ill get straight to the point, its time men speak up to call for women to be treated with dignity and respect they deserve.
Its about time men like me and you – men who have been enjoying the priviledges of a society skewed in our favour – speak up along with women in their equality.
Gender equality requires equal enjoyment by women and men of socially-valued goods, opportunities, resources and rewards. Where gender inequality exists it is generally women who are excluded or disadvantaged in relation to decision-making and access to economic and social resources.
Therefore a critical aspect of promoting gender equality is the empowerment women, with a focus on identifying and redressing power inbalances and giving women more autonomy to manage their own lives. Gender equality does not mean that men and women become the same, only that access to opportunities and life changesis neither dependent on, nor constrained by, their sex. Achieving gender equality requires women’s empowerment to ensure that decision-making at private and public levels , and access to resources are no longer weighted in men’s favour, so that both women and men can fully participate as equal partners in productive life. FEMINISM IS NOT A DIRTY WORD.
Feminism is about gender equality. Its not about subverting, oppressing or taking away the rights of boys and men. Its most certainly not about hating males.
For when gender equality is achieved, everybody wins. This is not woman right but Human Rights.
#humanright #genderequality #speakup #useyourvoices #menandwomen #genderequality is a major key to moving foward.
