Check why resident doctors are angry and on strike

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) began an indefinite nationwide strike to protest federal government’s nonpayment of salaries and welfare packages.

Here are the demands of the disgruntled doctors:

*Resident doctors should be enrolled into the integrated personnel payroll information system which has been on since 2003.

*Government should look into the non – implementation of adjusted house officers entry grade level equivalent since 2014.

*Government should amend hospitals facilities, equipment and the inadequate working conditions of all doctors.

*The settlement of “stagnation of promotion and non-promotion of members” who have met required criteria despite the collective bargaining agreement and circulars.

*All heads or tertiary health institutions who have received funding for the payment of resident doctors in their establishment should be directed to pay same immediately.

*Effectuation of the National Health Act.

*A resolution of “persistent shortfall and unpaid arrears of salaries” earned in both federal and state of institutions.

*The association also wants the minister of health, ISAAC ADEWOLE, the former health minister, OYEBUCHI CHUKWU and one other to be sanctioned “for carrying out activities and actions inimical to welfare progress of the association.
