CITY 105.5 FM RELOCATION

Gbemileke (Oscar) Oyinsan‘This is just one step out of many to come’

OSCAR GBEMILEKE OYINSAN – Head of Programmes

City 105.1 FM, a radio station that celebrates the lifestyle of Lagos,  relocated to its new site on Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, in early April 2014.

The new complex furnished to taste with digitalized studios is a sight to behold.

In a chat with Oscar Gbemileke Oyinsan, the Head of Programmes and Maureen Obi, the Head of Marketing, they led us into development that prompted the relocation and new programmes expected from the station and much more…

What is City FM rating presently?

For the rating, according to MPS (Media Planning Services), we are among the top 10 most listened to radio station in Lagos. We are doing very well and better recognized.

The jingle concept announcing your relocation was very unique. Why the choice?

The concept was something different. It was like a search mission. It was really a brainstorming session when one of our production guys (Lincoln), came up with it. We then fine tune it. It was a teaser though. The next one is coming soon.

Are there new programmes to be added to the existing one?

Now, we are working with Trace TV, we are working with Grumi, it’s an online platform. They deal with music. We have some quiz competition coming up. There is another one coming up on basic technology. So, we are revamping some of our programmes and there are going to be some major changes for the next quarter. Because we just settled now, we are going to the next stage which is programming, consolidating and pushing the brand. Now, we are talking to a lot of companies to handle our media, our outlook. PR consultants and some agencies are being contacted to participate. We are basically targeting to be one of the top three radio stations in Lagos. And we believe we can achieve that this year or latest next year.

Do you have a celebrity programme your listeners look up to every time?

We have an adopted one. We have City Press, another magazine programme from Monday to Friday. This programme really focuses on people in all walks of life, be it politicians, activists, and many more. So, this platform  promotes other people who are doing very well.

What separates City FM from other stations?

At City FM, our slogan is ‘Lifestyle of Lagos”.  Basically, it’s the people’s station. It is the station that every Lagosian and everybody in a city will love. Information that you would not get anywhere, you will get it here. We have grassroots news. In terms of linking up with the local government, now we have gone round all the local governments in the state. We have a relationship with them. So, it’s our station. It’s just like you walking down the road and talking to your neighbor. It’s the same thing with City FM. Just tune in and we give it to the people in the city.

Expansion brought you here. Should we also look out for City FM in other cities and states.?

Yes. It is very possible in the nearest future. Most stations now spread their tentacles. It’s a kind of old school to have one station. For you to actually extend and reach out to more people and be more established, you need to expand. What you have just seen is just one step out of many other steps to come. The team is geared to move further to other cities in Nigeria. Though every city is unique, the template will still be the same, which is the station of the people.

Maureen Obi‘We relocated for rebranding and business’

MAUREEN OBI  –Head of Marketing

When did you move to the new complex?

We moved in mid-April (2014).

Is this your permanent site?

Yes, it is. At least for now, this is where we are settled.

What prompted your relocation?

We thought that our former place didn’t quite show to the public that a radio station exists there. Also as part of our rebranding, we decided to move to a place where we can be recognized. Where people can access and do business with us. So, it’s for branding and business. Rebranding, for us, is continuous, including marketing and content, because content is why we are here. Content is what we sell.

What are the facilities you have on ground here?

We have our digitalized studios, we have guest lounges for meeting, and we have space to do anything we need to do.  It’s a good and conducive working environment for us. We didn’t enjoy that luxury where we came from.

How long did it take you to get this place ready and at what cost?

Though work was in stages, we were done in about three months. To be frank, it is difficult to put a figure to the cost, work is still going on. But it runs into millions.

When did City FM start broadcasting?

We started four years ago. Then, we rebranded the structure, not the image per-se.
