Classic series: Akande/Egbuson’s wedding revisited

THE over four years romance between Nollywood star, Dakore Omobola Egbuson and Olumie Bamidele Akande has finally been cemented with marital vows.  After a secret engagement ceremony, they walked down the aisle at Guiding Light Assembly, Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos, on Sunday, January 16, 2011, while guests were treated to a swell reception at KFA Event Centre, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.  Dakore, daughter of Mr. Samuel and Mrs. Olaere Egbuson has maintained an enviable record in her career which saw Olumide, son of billionaire, Chief Harry Akande falling in love with her over and over again.

ENCOMIUM Weekly was at the wedding ceremony attended by a handful of known faces and brings you all the gists.

THE LOVE STORY OF OLUMIDE AND DAKORE

The love story of Olumide and Dakore span over four years, a love affair that went through many rumours of break up.  Their romance enjoyed the biggest hype ever and they waxed stronger in the midst of a rumoured non-acceptance of Dakore by Olumide’s parents –billionaire Chief Harry Akande and his wife, Chief (Mrs.) Tolulope Akande.  The tale was generated on the context that Dakore, a Nollywood star may not stay long in marriage just as some of her colleagues in the industry have exemplified.  But now they can laugh as both parents can go to sleep about the safety of their own.

NUPTIAL ON A SUNDAY

Hardly do we see weddings on a Sunday and if we do, there must be a very strong reason for it.  The Akande and the Egbusons chose Sunday, January 16, 2011, for their union and maybe it’s just a sheer divine choice because a day before the groom’s father, Chief Harry Akande was in Abuja slugging it out with other contestants for the ANPP presidential ticket which he failed to clinch at the end of the exercise.

A SECRET ENGAGEMENT PARTY

Earlier in the day, Olumide and Dakore were engaged secretly outside the knowledge of most guests.  The venue was somewhere very close to the venue of the marriage blessing, Guiding Light Assembly, in Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos.  Those who sneaked in were turned back.

THE WAITING GAME

The marriage blessing scheduled for 2 p.m actually kicked off at 3.50 p.m.  Most of the guests had arrived and settled inside the church since 1 p.m waiting for the couple.  There was not a dull moment however, throughout the waiting period as the church’s praise team entertained the congregation with select jazz tunes.

ABOUT GUIDING LIGHT ASSEMBLY

The Guiding Light Assembly is one of the most expensive buildings in that part of the state.  The sanctuary, headed by Pastor Wale Adefarasin is a glass house with a theatrical shaped inner chamber where seats that can accommodate over 3,000 were neatly arranged.  The church attracts the high and mighty resident in Parkview, Ikoyi and environs.  Redeemed’s Pastor E. A. Adeboye laid the foundation stone in 1998 and Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor did the dedication in 2009.

‘PLEASE, BEAR WITH US’

That seemed to be what Pastor Wale Adefarasin told other guest ministers for the nuptial.  That was around 3.05 p.m when the couple were being expected.  The preacher had Pastors Eastwood Anaba and Sam Okoro assisting him.

OLUMIDE AKANDE PROTEST

Just when everything was going on well, a protest came from the groom, Olumide for a chance to kiss Dakore for the first time in the presence of everyone.  The minister in charge had intentionally skipped that part to save time.  And of course, the request was granted.  What followed was a very deep and intensive kissing.

THE MASS MIGRATION

There was a mass movement of guests from the church to KFA Events Centre, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos even before the church proceeding was concluded.  The mass relocation was brought about because of the huge distance between the two venues.  Most of the guests rushed down to the reception to secure choice positions.  By the time the service was concluded, only few people were available for the photo shoot.

WHERE IS DAKORE?

That was the question on the lips of guests after the church service.  Dakore’s whereabouts became a mystery, unknown to many the actress had escaped to a spot where some touches were made on her face by Bayo Haastrup.  She emerged for the photo shoot just when a search party was about to be sent after her.

ENTERTAINERS NIGHT OUT

Top participants in the entertainment industry, the constituency Dakore came from were at the nuptial.  We had Stella Damasus, Monalisa Chinda, Rita Dominic, Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, Sola Idowu (Weird MC), Segun Arinze and his wife and others.

IFEOMA WILLIAMS, FUNKE KUTI JOINED OTHER WELL WISHERS

Though a large turn out of who is who on the social terrain did not have a strong representation at the wedding, few faces could still be recorded.  Former Face of Lux, Ifeoma Williams was in the house, so was Funke Kuti, ex-wife of Afrobeat king, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti.  Two former on-air personalities, Ruth Benamesia Opia and Sienne Allwell Brown also registered their presence.  So also, we spotted Bloomingdale’s Ngozi Nkolenyi.

WHAT THE TWO FAMILIES WORE

The official colours of the day was Clementine orange and gold.  The garbs paraded by the two families were in those colours.  The Egbusons from Bayelsa incorporated the two colours in a three-piece outfit of a blouse, wrapper and headgear.  The Akandes from Ibadan, Oyo State paraded an all glamour lace fabric in bright and beautiful colours.

YAKUBU GOWON CHAIRED THE EVENT

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon was the chairman of the occasion.  The elder statesman was with the two families all through the event.

BETWEEN THE BRIDE’S MAIDS AND THE USHERETTES

Hardly would anyone point out the difference between the dresses worn by the bride’s maids and the usherettes.  The obvious was noticed at the reception where the usherettes, supplied by the event manager, Zapphaire’s Funke Bucknor-Obruthe was mistaken for the bridal train.  The train had Lisa Leigh Okojie, Cynthia Egbuson, songstress and Glo ambassador, Ego Ogbaro and Sophie Okoya, wife of Lanre Okoya, one of the sons of billionaire, Chief Razaq Akanni Okoya.

FOLASHADE MARQUIS SHOWED SUPPORT

Ms. Folashade Marquis, former wife of billionaire, Dr. Mike Adenuga, was at the wedding ceremony.  She was garbed in the Akande’s aso ebi lace fabric and orange headgear.  Some people didn’t notice her until later in the night.  Ms. Marquis is the mother of Oyin Adenuga, Bella Disu, Jide and Paddy Adenuga.

OYIN ADENUGA, WOLE ABODERIN UNDER THE SAME ROOF

Since the cooked up wedding plan between Oyin Adenuga and Wole Aboderin last year, Oyin, daughter of billionaire owner of Globacom had mellowed down and chances of their meeting had not surfaced until the Sunday, January 16, 2011, Akande/Egbuson wedding.  They greeted each other casually an indication that something must have gone wrong.  Oyin actually spent quality time chatting with Lanre Okoya at the wine bar.

MONALISA CHINDA SET VENUE ON FIRE

Actress Monalisa Chinda was a cynosure of all eyes with her killer dress.  The movie s tar showed up in a dress that revealed her cleavages.  Her dress sense was a source of distraction at the wedding.

OLUMIDE’S REACTION AT THE RECEPTION

The newest husband in town, Olumide didn’t hide his displeasure at the poor crowd control at the reception which was said to be one of the major lapses that day.  Upon arrival, Lou, as his friends love to call him, summoned those in charge of that section and a correction was effected.

BONIX LEADS ON ALL FRONTS

Corporate attired men from the stable of Bonix, the drinks supplier were all around the marquee at KFA Events Centre, Lagos.  Courteous and responsive, they ensured drinks of all sorts went round.

OSKAR IBRU CAME

Heir apparent to the Ibru dynasty, Olorogun Oskar Ibru was at the nuptial and there was no doubt the 53 year-old enjoyed every bit of the event as he moved from one spot to the other with a wine glass firmly rooted in his hand.

THE MOST DOMINATING DRINK

The most served drink at the nuptial was an expensive wine, Veuve Clicquot.  The wine was on ever table and the cost per bottle was put at N75,000.

THE SURPRISE ARTIST

Bez, a fast-rising singer was the surprise and expensive artist of the night.  He was specially requested by the couple to perform.  The compere, Wildchild, who had earlier announced that there would be a special performance session, put everyone in suspense as to who the artist could be.  In fact, many had speculated that it would be D’Banj or 2Face until the Hennessy Artistry performer emerged from a closet.

STREET URCHINS LAID AMBUSH

Street urchins shut out from the proceedings laid ambush for important dignitaries at the reception. One area where they made their money was at the parking lot.  They demanded financial reward for keeping watch over cars of guests, most of them smiled home with their pockets full of naira notes.

THOSE WHO CAME

Otunba J. K. Randle, Chief and Chief (Mrs.) Ayo Adebanjo, Mr. Muyiwa Ige, Chief and Mrs. Bayo Ojo, Chief Kenny Martins, Mrs. Joko Oni and a host of others.
