Classics: Pero’s death officially confirmed by Lagos State Government

IT is now official, the most wanted female fraudster, Ms. Pero Sosan is dead.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris admitted that the controversial lady passed on at the Lagos General Hospital, Broad Street, Lagos.

The Commissioner who spoke to us on Thursday, June 11, 2009, via a text message said the autopsy report is still being awaited.

Here are the context of his message: “I have requested (for) a report from the hospital.  I am also told that an autopsy was ordered to ascertain the cause of death, the result of which is being awaited.”

The message was sent on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at 23:07:26.

The official confirmation from the state government has thus put paid to the rumour making the rounds that the lady fraudster was not dead.

Ms. Sosan was said to have died on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the General Hospital, Lagos, while receiving treatment from a suicide attempt in the police cell.

She was arrested by the police from Special Fraud Unit, Milverton Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, for duping some people millions of naira. This was on Friday, May 22, 2009, from her hideout at 1, Tunde Salisu Street, NNPC Junction, Ejigbo, Lagos.  She was taken to the General Hospital, Lagos on Saturday, May 23, 2009, after she alerted the police of her worsening condition.

She was on the hospital bed recuperating well only for her death to be unofficially announced on that Tuesday, June 2, 2009.

Not a few people suspected a foul play, particularly her victims who were waiting for her to be discharged from the hospital and be taken to the law court.

The rumour that her stomach was swollen when her corpse was found that Tuesday morning confirmed the fear of many that her death was not natural.

Thus raising the question of what killed her?  Did she actually commit suicide or did one of the people she had duped poisoned her?  These are the questions that have been agitating the minds of a lot of people who knew her.  Some of them believed Pero loved life so much that she would never contemplate suicide.

Others are of the view that though they are close to Pero in her lifetime, but they never knew the stuff she was made of.  They said at the different times of their relationship with her, she had sprung up different antics that they have given up trying to know or understand her.

As far as they were concerned, it is not impossible that she killed herself.

Meanwhile, the family through her cousins, a lawyer and a police officer, and her children are trying frantically to secure her corpse for burial.

What is delaying them is the autopsy report which was not ready as at the time of this report.

Ms. Pero Sosan as we told you in our previous editions was a serial fraudster who duped so many people of several millions of naira.  Her modus operandi was to get intimate with her victims, tell them how influential she was.  Names like that of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Governor Gbenga Daniel, Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Governor Rasheed Ladoja, Otunba Mike Adenuga, Dr. Erastus Akingbola of Intercontinental Bank and many others were those she used to dupe a lot of her victims.

For instance, her latest victim, Mrs. Sola Agoro, who was one of those behind her recent arrest by police was duped N8 million for contracts she promised to help her secure from Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State and Dr. Tola Kasali, Commissioner for Special Duties in Lagos State.

Mr. Segun Oginni, another victim of hers was fleeced of N1.3 million for a N20 million loan facility she promised him (Oginni) to secure from Intercontinental Bank Plc, saying the chief executive officer and vice president of the bank, Dr. Erastus Akingbola was her boyfriend.

One Miss Magdalene, a businesswoman was duped N2.5 million for a contract she was to help her secure from Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State.

A PR consultant based in Surulere, Lagos was hoodwinked to cough out N1.7 million for a business deal from Otunba Mike Adenuga, who she claimed was her boyfriend who bought a house for her in London.

Some Nigerian artistes such as Ayo Mogaji, Akin Lewis, Jumoke George, Ebun Oloyede and so many others were also duped by the woman.  She had told them of a soap opera entitled, Above 40, which was to be aired on African Independent Television (AIT), for four quarters and later NTA Network. She collected money from Intercontinental Bank for the soap opera which never saw the light of the day nor were the artistes that were camped at Ologbo Nla Hotel, Isheri Idimu, Lagos for more than three months paid a dime.

Late General Sani Abacha, Nigerian military head of state was said to have been duped by this lady when he was head of state was said to have been duped by this lady when he was in power.

A former communication minister of Northern origin who even bought a house and boutique for her in Kano was also duped by her before she was thrown out.

Late Oba Funsho Adeolu a.k.a Chief Eleyinmi in his lifetime would never forget his experience in the hand of Ms. Pero Sosan.  To avoid paying the sum of money lent her by the chief, she printed and pasted her obituary around Chief Eleyinmi’s residence at Ikoyi, Lagos then.  It was a stupefied Chief Eleyinmi that later met the supposedly dead Pero at an event in National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.

Ms. Pero Sosan who left behind two sons, we learnt, will be ‘honoured’ by her actor colleagues and family members during her funeral.
