Comedian Funky Mallam launches Face of the Stars

SAEED Muhammed, a.k.a Funky Mallam, is known for his dexterity in interpreting the role of Hausa Muslim scholar in soap operas and movies.  Funky Mallam is a graduate of Mass Communication from Bayero University, Kano.  He has featured in a lot of movies but the series that brought him to limelight were Paradise Park and Face to Face.  He also played a different role in Kunle Afolayan’s October 1.

In a chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly, the talented role interpreter talks about his career and more…

What is the latest with you, in terms of your work?

We thank God for digital revolution in Nigeria.  This has given us a new platform.  We now have Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba channels, where we can hear our own language.  This has helped extend our talent to our locales.  We now have Hausa entertainment company of international standard entitled, Face of the Stars.  It is showing on Startimes and DSTV.  I am looking forward to taking it to more countries.

What is the show about?

It’s an entertainment show.  We showcase popular and up and coming artistes.  It doesn’t matter the tribe the artiste comes from, they come on the show and entertain.  We also interview stars, well known celebrities that speak Hausa and most people do not know.  On the show, we have had people like P-Square, MI, Eedris Abdulkareem, Saint Obi, Segun Arinze, they all speak Hausa.  This show is a platform that makes them relate to their Northern fans.  It’s a standard show which we use about eight cameras to shoot. I host the show alongside a female colleague, Mariam.

Funky-Mallam2Do you speak only Hausa on the show?

We speak both Hausa and English on the show.  DSTV started showing the first season on Saturday, November 14, 2015.

Apart from the show, what other things keep you busy?

I am also planning other things. I have been shooting movies too.

How has this year been for you?

2015 is very tough, but I thank God for everything.  I have shot a lot of movies and did some programmes.  I have endorsement.  Nothing makes one happier.

Can you please mention some of the films you have done recently?

I would like to start from last year.  I featured in October 1, Birthday Bash, The Department, Happily Ever After.  I have forgotten others. I have endorsements from Globacom and others.  I am looking forward to coming up with another entertainment show. It’s going to be in English.  We are putting things in place. I don’t want to disclose the details.

Aside comedy, what else do you do?

Aside comedy, I anchor events.  I also sing and perform.  I do movies and TV soaps.  I am involved in several things really.

What type of music do you do?

I do inspirational songs. I have several singles.  I am working on a peace song.  It’s a song that explains that true Muslims are not violent, evil or trouble makers.  A lot of people think Muslims are evil or bad people, considering the activities of Boko Haram.  But the same Islam taught us to live in peace with our neighbours.
