Since the late Liberian Patrick Sawyer brought into Nigeria the Ebola Virus, death toll occasioned from the virus has reached six.
First was Patrick himself who was the principal carrier. He died on Friday, July 25, 2014, at First Consultants Medical Centre, Lagos, where he was admitted upon arrival in Lagos. After Patrick’s death and his body cremated in Lagos, one of the nurses who attended to him reportedly died on August 5, 2014. Then came Mr. Jatto Abdulqudir, a 36 year old ECOWAS member in Lagos. He lost the battle to Ebola one week after the nurse’s death. Mr. Jatto was infected with the virus when he welcomed late Patrick Sawyer to Nigeria and he was buried in Ikorodu, Lagos.
Justina Ejelonu was the fourth person to have died from the virus in Nigeria. She too attended to Patrick Sawyer when he was brought to First Consultants Medical Centre, Lagos. Ejelonu, 25, was one of the primary contacts with late Sawyer at First Consultants, Lagos. Justina died on August 14, 2014.
And after her death the family complained of discrimination from those around them. Elder sister of late Justina, Oyinye Lovelyn Anugwolu narrated how her husband, parents and sisters faced public humiliation and incredible pressure.
On Tuesday, August 19, 2014 Nigeria recorded another death caused by the Ebola virus. Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh passed on at the Lagos Mainland Hospital, Lagos. She was infected with the virus by Patrick Sawyer. Before her death, Dr. Adedavoh was the consultant in charge of cases relating to endocrinology. She was called to the hospital that fateful day to review the late Sawyer’s case before she got infected with the virus.
