On Thursday, May 29, 2014, the organisers of Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA) released a long list of nominees for the 9th edition of the awards taking place on August 31, 2014, in New York City, USA.
The list has however sparked controversies among artistes and music buffs. First to react was the duo of Skuki, who felt insulted to have been nominated for the Best New Act Category alongside Orezi, Patoranking, Charass, Tekno, Oritsefemi, among others.
Skuki stormed the industry in 2010, with hit single, Banger. Same year, they won the prestigious Next Rated Award at the highly rated award, Hip Hop World (now Headies). While reacting to their inclusion, the pop duo rejected the nomination, saying it may have been an error. They therefore urged the organisers to remove their name.
“Best New Act…bawo? Backward never NEA Awards kindly eject my name from that category,” one half of the duo, Peeshaun tweeted.
“Not moved by social acceptance or crowd mentality. Awards don’t put money in my bank account. Dat nomination had beta been an error,” he continued.
Vavavoom also spoke with ENCOMIUM Weekly. He said, “I don’t know where they invented such insult. We didn’t submit any entry, as such we weren’t expecting any nomination from them. We don’t even know their procedure…we never discussed such category with anyone… ever.”
Also, the choice of Double Wahala crooner, Oritsefemi in the same category has been questioned by pundits, as many lambasted the organisers. Oritsefemi has been in the industry for long. He was formally in a group called The Jingolist, before he went solo. In 2007/08, he released a hit entitled, Elewon, which means chase them, and another successful monstrous song, Mercy of the Lord.

A music producer, who didn’t want his name to be published said, “It’s very unfortunate that this is happening. How can you name Skuki and Oritsefemi in the New Act Category? This is bizarre, and the credibility of the award should be questioned. It’s either the panel don’t know anything about music or it’s deliberate, something must be wrong.”
In a chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly on Friday, May 30, 2014, one of the organisers of the awards, Akinwale Oluwaleimu declined comment, saying, “I am asking the same question too. I’m not a part of the nomination process, I just advise when asked and give event support where needed, especially in Nigeria.”
All efforts to speak with the President of NEA Awards, Mr. Martin Fayomi wasn’t successful. He didn’t reply our email as at the time of filing this report on Sunday, June 1, 2014.
The NEA Awards is an annual entertainment award show held in the United States, with the sole purpose of celebrating and recognizing contributions of entertainers to the African entertainment industry, while at the same time promoting the image and rich culture of Nigeria.
According to the release, voting starts July 1, 2014, and winners will be announced at the grand ceremony on August 31, 2014, at the Skirball Performing Art Center, New York City.
