Davido launches debut album, Omo Baba Olowo, counts blessings, ‘I’m not arrogant,’ he cries

DAMI duro crooner, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has finally released his 17-tracjer debut entitled Omo Baba Olowo. The album launch held on Sunday, July 22, 2012. ENCOMIUM Weekly had an interview with him where he cleared the air on so many allegations, his career, fame and cars. The 19 year-old is completely not bothered, he says he is yet to arrive.

Congrats, how do you feel about the acceptance of your debut album?

Thank you, I feel very great, it’s actually a dream come true. I thank God, I would say I am truly blessed. Though it hasn’t been easy but God has been very good to me.

What would you say the challenges of putting the album together was?

It hasn’t been easy, but I have enjoyed every minute of it. I would say the hardest part is narrowing all the songs I have recorded down to just 17 tracks, but I am very happy with the outcome. The album has come out really nice and I am happy about the acceptance everywhere. It’s one thing to release an album and it’s another for people to like and accept the album. I feel very fulfilled about my first album.

Why did you choose the title Omo Baba Olowo?

I chose that tile because it has become one of the most popular lines, from one of the most popular songs out in the last 12 months. Its instantly related to me when people hear it, anybody who hears Omo baba olowo would know its Davido, there’s no point going for something else that people would not have a clue of who owns the album or something. In fact, I am thinking I should trademark the name, Omo baba olowo (laughs).

Are you fulfilled with your success so far?

I would not say I am fulfilled but I am very happy and excited. It’s a dream come true. This is just the beginning for Davido, there’s still a lot I am working on, you guys would get to see more.

How does it feel being an MTN ambassador?

It’s a huge privilege to be an MTN ambassador at my age, it’s surprising but real. I am their first youth ambassador, I feel very honoured that I have been entrusted with that role. I feel very great about it that I have achieved so much at my age even though I still intend to achieve more.

You seem to have a flair for cars, what’s your favourite car and how many cars do you have?

I have many cars, but I love the Mercedes SLS which features in my overseas video, I would love to own it one day.

People say Davido is very arrogant, who exactly are you?

The people saying I am arrogant do not know me, because I don’t think those that know me would say that. Davido is just a musician, a son, a brother and a student. I am just a regular young man, living his dream. There’s nothing spectacular, but when someone isn’t close to you, the person would not know who exactly you are, that’s why people think I am arrogant. My close pals know I am not.

You were alleged to have been slapped by a policeman, is it true?

It’s completely false, I was not slapped by anybody. I wonder where those kind of rumours come from.

Whenever you hear this report, how do you feel?

Oh, I don’t mind. If they are not talking about you, I guess it means you are not relevant, so I don’t even disturb myself at all. People should keep talking.

You recently had an issue with Skuki about making use of the beat they already paid for and you promised not to include the song on your album, but the song is on your album, why?

I am afraid I don’t have an idea of what you are talking about, I can’t even remember anything of such happening at all.

We also heard you are signed to D’Banj’s record label, how true is it?

Very false! D’Banj is like my big brother, he is a mentor to me. He looks out for me and I look up to him and what he has done with his career. I am not signed to his record label.

Amidst all these allegations, Davido is still on the rise, what’s the secret?

Its God, my secret is God and I owe it all to Him. He is the one that makes me stronger and better.

What stands you out?

I am not sure, you guys should tell me. I guess it’s because I write and produce all my music myself. Not many artists can boast of that. That’s what stands me out.

At 19, how do you feel about all your achievements?

I am blessed and I don’t take any of this for granted. All glory goes to God Almighty.
