Davido speaks about his MTV Africa Music Awards

The 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) may have come and gone, but the thrills, excitement and breathtaking performances will live long.

The award recognizes and celebrates artistes who have distinguished themselves in the art of making music across the African continent.

This year’s edition held in South Africa, precisely at the Durban International Convention Centre in Kwa Zulu Natal saw 17 awards carted home, with Nigeria recording another dominant outing.

Seven of the 17 awards were won by Nigerian artistes; Gobe crooner, Davido was one of them after he clinched the Best Male Artiste award ahead of Tanzania’s Diamond, Ghana’s Sarkodie, South African rapper AKA and Wizkid of Nigeria. I am very excited and grateful to God.

What was your first reaction when you heard you won?

I wasn’t surprised because I know I have worked so hard and my fans have been so supportive, well deserved, I guess.

What do you think about the awards generally?

I think it’s a very huge platform and its bridging the gap between African artistes and the rest of the world, it’s getting better every year.

How would you describe your experience in Durban, South Africa?

It was wonderful, the weather was good, the people were friendly and I had fun.

What do you have on your hands right now?

Working on my new album which is due for release in August.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2015?

Going on tours and developing my merchandise.

What do you think Nigeria’s dominance at the awards says about our music?

Our market is the biggest in Africa, we have the highest number of talented and hard working artistes.
