Doris Simeon Extra: ‘I didn’t see the collapse of my marriage coming, I still miss my son’

– Denies dating a journalist

GORGEOUS actress cum film maker and CEO, Davris Beauty Centre, Ifako, Lagos, Doris Simeon has rubbished dating a journalist let alone planning to walk down the aisle with the said media practitioner.  She unbuttoned her heart on this and other issues when she visited ENCOMIUM Weekly’s Ogba, Lagos office on Monday, August 10, 2015.

What’s going on at the moment concerning your career?

I am on my latest shoot.  I am just on break.  I am planning to finish it this week.  For now, the working title is The Victim, which will definitely change along the line because I realized Mercy Aigbe too had shot a movie called, The Victim.  And after this week’s shoot, I am planning to do a bigger movie.  Also, I am working on my TV show.

What informed the title, The Victim?

Maybe the storyline. But it’s actually about malaria and how people become victims of such circumstance.

It’s going to two years you opened a salon, how would you describe the business so far?

It has been wonderful and great, and I thank God for that.  It has even opened my eyes to a lot of new styles that I need to learn and put them into my business as well.  Such new hairstyles will definitely bring in more customers.

What’s the most expensive hairstyle women do at the moment?

I won’t say hairstyle because hairstyle is not really expensive but the hair you buy is usually the expensive one going by the likes of Brazillian or Peruvian hair which sells at the range of N200,000 to N250,000.

That means you also deal in all these expensive hair…

(Cuts in) Yes, by demand.

How much did it cost you to establish the shop?

I can’t say specifically but it’s in the neighbourhood of N5 million.

Would you say it’s a profitable venture?

Yes, of course.  It’s very profitable.  When you buy hair of N200,000 and you see about three or four people buying from you per day, the gain on that alone is something.  Ordinarily, as a businesswoman, I may not get it for N200,000 but when you put the cost of transportation and other miscellaneous expenses attached to getting it, it will be around that amount.

Where do you source all these items?

They’re mainly imported from United Arab Emirates (Dubai) and United States of America.

The public impression is that most of you actresses veered into business because movies are not doing well again.  What informed your going into hair dressing?

I won’t say it’s because movies are not doing well and that’s why I went into hairdressing. It’s just because I have passion for it, even since when I was very young.  And it’s what our mom trained us with since the beginning of our lives.  It’s what we all grew up to know.  We’re always in the shop with her, trying to help her, especially when it comes to festive period when customers would keep trooping in.  We would be left with no alternative than to assist her so that she won’t be much stressed.  We must make sure everything went on well.  Since then, I have to sit up, continue learning from wherever we think we need to go and learn and put in more effort into our career.

Doris-Simeon-Daniel-Ademinokan-David-October-2013-BellaNaijaThere was a time we asked about your reaction concerning a story that you went to Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) church to pray for the return of your husband, Daniel Ademinokan and you denied it all.  Can you shed light on that for further clarification?

Like I said, I don’t know anything about that. I am a Christian and I go to any Bible believing church.  I go to church to pray, I don’t go to look at anybody’s face.  But whoever goes to church and starts watching me, that’s the person’s business.

But did you ever attend MFM for any reason whatsoever?

I go to any Bible believing church.  I attend any church they invite me, if I can’t go to my church at that particular time. I go to CLAM, CAC, CCC, even I go to mosque for prayer if I am invited.  That’s not my first time in MFM.

What’s the name of your church in particular?

My church is Trinity House.

How do you feel not having your son, David, in your custody?

No mother will be happy if her child is not with her. But then, that’s still my private life just like I keep saying, and I am dealing with it.

Do you really miss him?

Definitely, yes.  Why won’t I miss him?

How would you feel if there could be a kind of reconciliation between you and your ex, at least for the sake of the child?

Just like I said, everything concerning that is my private life, and I want to keep it private.

A couple of weeks ago, the tale was everywhere that This Day newspaper political editor, Wale Olaleye would be taking Doris Simeon to the altar on Saturday, August 8, 2015, but at the end of the day, nothing like that happened as Olaleye took the hands of another woman in marriage.  What’s your reaction to this?

I have no comment on that.  I still see it as part of my life as a celebrity.  If I walk in the street with another man, people will just say or write one or two things about it.  So, it’s just one of those things. I am used to it.

But what’s the actual relationship between you and Wale Olaleye?

Wale is my friend just like he is to you as well.  Whether we like it or not, people in the media and those of us in entertainment are all friends.

But people are saying you are dating and that you have been heart-broken again.  Now that the relationship didn’t end up in marriage, how would you react to this?

I don’t understand what you said they’re saying.  Were they there when we’re discussing that?  Are they prophets?  They should tell you and shed light on where they heard the story that we’re dating and that we wanted to get married.

As it were now, do you enjoy being a single mother for about three years that your marriage to Ademinokan had collapsed?

It’s even about five years we have separated.  And as a single mother, I think I love it.  I am a single mother, I love my child and I live my life.  It’s just one of those things but if by tomorrow God says this is who I am getting married to again, all well and good.  But, however it’s, as per my present situation, I am enjoying my life and thanking God because I am alive and I can eat without begging anybody for food. I believe as long as there is life, there is always hope in everything you do.  So, with my present situation, I thank God for everything.

Would you like to give marriage another shot?

Just like I said, if God says it’s time for me to get married again, all well and good.

Let’s get one picture clearly between you and the father of your child, are you divorced or just separated?

We’re still in court.  So, I don’t want to talk further on that.

So, the court is yet to decide on the case?

Yes!

Is there any man you’re looking at now if the divorce is finally concluded?

I don’t want to comment on that.

How old is Doris now?

I am in my 30s.

Why don’t you want to disclose your real age?

That’s Nigerian women for you.  So, get used to it.

What do you think actually informed the collapse of your marriage apart from all the allegations and counter allegations between the two of you?  Did you see it coming?

Nobody will ever want his or her home to collapse.  So, why will I see that and still go into it.

How do you feel about the whole situation?

No one will be happy when one is heart broken or one has a broken home.  I don’t like dwelling on the past or crying over spilled milk.  What concerns me most is focusing on my future and whatever it is I need to do at the moment.

You just returned from the US, what’s the purpose of the trip?

I went for a stage play. It was like a tour.  We’re working on the states we need to visit.  I was one of the organizers, Femi Brainard was also part of us and some other people in the US.  We were planning the show itself, the script, the auditioning and the states we would go for the show before I was called back to Nigeria by the producers of Ribena for the renewal of my contract as the face of Ribena.

How many times have you renewed the endorsement deal?

It runs for two years and it’s going to go to other countries as well because some other countries are interested in the advert as well.  I was the face of Ribena for like four years before the contract was terminated and I was recalled for the renewal.  There was a gap of like two years now.

How much did you get from the contract?

It’s something one will always smile to the bank and tell the manager you need to see him or her.

That means you’re handsomely rewarded?

I thank God for everything.

How much has that affected your life?

I thank God for everything because it makes me get close to kids.  I actually acted Ribena Mummy and a lot of kids watch the advert.  And each time children see me, they call me Ribena Mummy.  And I am happy about that.

What next now, career wise?

I am planning to go to South Africa again this year for Lincoln Season II.  I was there last year for about two months.  We’re going for another two months for another shoot.

What does that attract too?

It attracts a lot of money too. I thank God for what He is doing in my life.
