A Mexican drug cartel hunted down and murdered a social media journalist who campaigned to expose local gang violence.
María del Rosario Fuentes Rubio used the pseudonym Felina (catwoman) to stay safe as she reported crimes by the cartels – the Zetas and Gulf Cartel – in Tamaulipas state (Mexico).
Early this month, Maria started receiving threats on Twitter; she, however, remained defiant. But on October 16, the cartel had identified her, tracked her down and killed her.
