Drugs and prostitution contribute £12.3bn to Britain’s economy

According to figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), spending on illegal drugs and prostitution was worth an estimated £12.3bn (N3.075tr) to Britain’s economy in 2013.

It is the first time prostitution and the sale of illegal drugs – including heroin, crack cocaine and home-produced cannabis – have been included in spending figures in the UK.

So far this year, the figure is around £6.1bn (N1.5tr) for the first two quarters.
