Ebola: Liberia, Guinea meeting set targets – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the 60-day goals it set in October to tackle the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the disease-torn West African countries have been largely successful.

WHO had set a target of isolating and treating 70 per cent of patients and of safely burying 70 per cent of victims in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea by December 1. But Sierra Leona was set back by an increase in cases.

WHO’s Assistant Director-General, Bruce Aylward said: “You can catch up with Ebola even on this scale…but there is no room for optimism”.

Since the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus, there have almost 6,000 recorded deaths in Nigeria, Guinea, Mali, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
