Ekiti governor, Segun Oni admits being attacked by UNAD students

‘It’s the handiwork of my enemies,’ he says

THE attack on the governor of Ekiti State, Engineer Segun Oni by University of Ado Ekiti students on Monday, August 23, 2010, has been described by the man at the helm of affairs in the state as an evil act masterminded by some disgruntled politicians in the state, who, according to him, are perpetually plotting his downfall, adding that the attack was uncalled for.

Speaking further with ENCOMIUM Weekly via his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Wale Ojo Lanre, the bespectacled politician expressed dismay on the action of the irate students, describing it as shameless and barbaric.  The engineer-turned-politician also said that some politicians in the state  masterminded the violent attack.

“It is true that there was an attack by UNAD students targeted at the governor but they didn’t succeed.  None of the stones they threw hit the governor nor any of his aides.  And none of our vehicles was damaged as being speculated.  The act was shameless and barbaric.  It was a sign that they are a bunch of ingrates.  To start with, no governor has ever affected the lives of students positively in Ekiti State as Governor Segun Oni has done.  About the hike in school fees they are protesting, no one asked them not to protest but it should be done in a civilized way.  They thought they could embarrass the governor but he was never embarrassed.  They were used by some politicians in the state, who are jealous of the achievement of Governor Oni,” he said.

Probed further on the identities of the politicians he is referring to, he reacted thus, “It is obvious that they are the politicians in the opposition camp whose aim is to dent the image of the governor.  They are enemies of progress and they can’t succeed.  We learnt that ex-governor Fayose and Dr. Kayode Fayemi and few other politicians, met with the students the night to the day of the attack.  Automatically, they must know about it,” he alleged.
