Exercising helps cure dementia

A new study found that exercising three times a week will help in the cure of dementia in the elderly. Dementia is a persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease marked by memory disorder.

Experts have also encouraged exercising every day to every individual, stating that keeping fit helps reduce risk of dementia and other sicknesses.

In an article published in the Neurology Medical journal, findings revealed that exercise can be used to treat various illnesses. Noting that constant physical activities actually reverse dementia.

Elderly people with an average of age of 74 placed on an exercise programme, showed improvement in their thinking skills. Their blood pressure also improved and they were able to do long walks.

At the University of British Columbia, experts studied people with early signs of vascular dementia.  It was observed that those who exercised have improved reasoning skills up to 1.7 points compared to those who didn’t.

Tereasa Lui-Ambrose, study author stated, “Studies have shown that exercise can help reduce the risk of developing memory problems, but few studies have looked at whether it can help people who already have these problems get better or keep from getting worse. This result, while modest, was similar to that seen in previous studies testing the use of drugs for people with vascular cognitive impairment.”

Also stressing the importance of exercise to cure dementia, head of research at Alzheimer’s Research, UK, Dr. Rosa Sancho said, “We know that regular aerobic exercise can help improve cardiovascular health, but it has also been linked with a healthy brain and a reduced risk of developing dementia. This new study suggests that an aerobic exercise programme may be beneficial for people who already have early memory problems.”
