Facebook and Twitter top moments of 2014 revealed

While the World Cup tops the list for Twitter as the most discussed, Scottish independence was the most talked about on Facebook.

There were 3.3 million comments, posts and likes about the referendum on polling day in September and a huge 10 million in the five weeks running up to it.

The Brazil World Cup broke records to become the most tweeted about subject globally, while the horrific abduction of more than 200 Nigerian school girls by terrorist group, Boko Haram got personalities all over the world tweeting in condemnation of the act.

Twitter’s most popular topics

1. One of the biggest Twitter “moments” of 2014 was the World Cup. When Germany won the Cup, soccer fans unleashed a flurry of 618,725 tweets per minute, the biggest traffic peak of the year. Overall, there were 672 million tweets sent by fans, players and teams during the month-long soccer tournament in Brazil.

2. The “Golden Tweet” of 2014 came from Ellen DeGeneres, whose star-studded selfie at the Oscars was re-tweeted more than 3.3 million times. This year’s “Golden Tweet” featured Ellen, along with Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum, Lupita Nyong’o, and Lupita’s brother all crammed into the frame.

3. Over 4.5 million tweets mentioned #BringBackOurGirls – a hashtag that raised awareness about the plight of kidnapped Nigerian school girls. US First Lady, Michelle Obama propelled the movement when her account tweeted a picture of her holding a sign that had the hashtag on it. That tweet is her @FLOTUS account’s most retweeted tweet to date – a Twitter spokesperson said it received 9 million impressions, meaning it was seen 9 million times.”

4. Scotland’s referendum on independence from the United Kingdom sparked the hashtag #IndyRef and was tweeted more than 3.7 million times throughout the campaign. The Scots ultimately voted against independence.

5. Outrage over police brutality and racism followed the killing of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, U.S.A. The incident, gave rise to the hashtag #Ferguson with the case spawning more than 18 million tweets as protests flared there in August.

6. The pro-Democracy movement in Hong Kong has been another popular Twitter topic. There were more than 2.3 million tweets about the #UmbrellaRevolution, as the protests are known.

7. Recently, the hashtag #ICantBreathe has emerged in the days since a grand jury on Staten Island declined to indict a white officer in case of Eric Garner, an unarmed man who died after the officer used a choke hold to subdue him. His last words were “I can’t breathe.”

8. Justin Bieber, One Directions’ Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Liam Payne, Ariana Grande, Demo Lovato, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Louis Tomlinson and Taylor Swift were the most “mentioned” celebrity personalities on Twitter in 2014.

9. Overall, Katy Perry is the most-followed star on Twitter with 60 million. Justin Bieber is catching up with 56 million. President Barack Obama is the most followed political or world leader with 50 million Twitter followers, putting him in third behind the pop stars.
