First Call: Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs, celebrities endorse Walk Against Rape campaign

The fifth edition of the much awaited Walk Against Rape has again got a nod from the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Also in support of the campaign are Nigerian celebrities like Kate Henshaw, Monalisa Chinda, Toke Makinwa, Desmond Elliot, Ini Edo, Omotola Ekeinde, Emmanuel Ikubese (Mr. Nigeria), Gbemi Olateru, Iyanya and Emma Nyra.

Others are Mercy Aigbe, Iyabo Ojo, Kemi Akindoju, among others.

Walk Against Rape Campaign is a special demonstration that brings together mothers, fathers, guardians, teachers, youths, advocates and other stakeholders to lend a voice to sexually abused persons, particularly women and children, and also show their support to the cause of bringing an end to rape in Nigeria where the heinous act is on the increase.

“Our aim is to help in encouraging victims of rape to speak up and to reduce the stigmatization attached to the victims of sexual abuse and rape; as well as use Walk Against Rape as a platform to inform society about the soaring scourge of sexual abuse, especially as it relates to young girls and women in general.

“We intend achieving a lot more with the campaign this year as we would be having a three-month sensitization workshop, College Acquaintance Rape Education (CARE), in partnership with the Lagos State Government and the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team for young people of secondary and primary school age. The aim is to sensitize and educate them on rape and encourage them to speak out.

The workshop kicked off on February 18, 2015 with star actor, Desmond Elliot, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos, Mr. Ade Ipaye and a host of other stakeholders in attendance,” Walk Against Rape Campaign co-ordinator, Esther Ijewere-Kalejaiye said in a chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly.

The Walk Against Rape campaign organized by Rubies Ink Initiative is slated for Tuesday, March 10, 2015. Participants would converge at Archbishop Vinning Memorial Church ground, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, while the walk ends at Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

LEMUEL IYALIA STORMS UNILAG WITH CLASSIC CONCERT IN MARS

The main auditorium of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, will be agog on Sunday, March 15, 2015, when the first edition of the long -awaited The Lemuel Iyalla Classic Concert in Mars, storms the revered institution of higher learning.

In a chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly, the prime mover and founder of the forthcoming evening event, Lemuel Iyalla, disclosed that the concert will feature comedy and other side attractions for all lovers and patrons of classical music.

Iyalla, a graduate of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from the same university, who equally has a distinction in the Association Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM), London Grade 5 Examination, further maintained that the concert would definitely change the face and concept of classical music in Nigeria.

“Finally, it enhances mental alertness and memory according to a Northumbria University study.
