Gani Adams marks 15 years of celebrating June 12

– Charges Buhari on dividends of democracy

On Friday, June 12, 2015, National Coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani Adams marked 15 years the organization has been celebrating the winner of June 12,1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola.

This year’s memorial event held at Excellence Hotel, Ogba, Lagos, and as usual, featured a lecture with the theme: June 12,1993 And Nigeria’s Political Administration, delivered by Prof. Godini G. Darah of Delta State University, Abraka.

In his introductory note, the university don referred to June 12, 1993 as the day Nigerian masses demonstrated the superiority of civilian power over authocratic and corrupt rule. According to Darah, the people’s popular revolt against their oppressors was truly heroic; hence the need for its celebration.

In his speech, Gani Adams called for constant remembrance of the late politician and other heroes and heroines who died in the cause of the election which was annulled by the then military head of state, General Ibrahim Babangiga (rtd).

The Arigidi Akoko, Ondo born activist also urged the federal and state governments to come up with welfare programmes that will take care of the aged and children in our society in line with the agenda of late Abiola.

Speaking further, “As we remember Bashorun MKO Abiola today, we must remember that the major lesson in the June 12, 1993, election is that Nigerians can overlook some factors bedeviling the nation’s politics today.

“Like never before, June 12 proved that it is possible for Nigerians to look beyond religious or tribal affiliations for political and electoral decisions.

“I want to state it once again that we must not forget or lose sight of the fact that whatever democratic norm that we enjoy today must be credited to the martyrdom of chief MKO Abiola. So, the Nigerian government needs to recognize Abiola’s self sacrifice for democracy in Nigeria.”

Adams also charged Buhari to deliver as Nigerians are waiting to hold him accountable for his performance in office as president of this country.

“While I seize this opportunity to once again congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari on his March 28, 2015 victory, I wish to tell him that there is a lot of work to be. Done and that Nigerians will hold take him for the promises he made to them during his campaign”
