Genevieve Nnaji on fashion, love and life

NOLLYWOOD super star, Genevieve Nnaji doesn’t always talk about herself.  But the elegant and adorable star actress was close to this in this chat we had with her after she emerged the Most Elegant Woman in the 30s at the Sunday, March 20, 2011, ENCOMIUM Elegance and Style Awards.

Congratulations on winning the Most Elegant Woman (30s) Award.

It’s amazing.  I am glad.  I feel honoured and flattered.  It has been a long time I won an award like this. I really appreciate it a lot.

What’s your impression about The Black & White Ball?

I think they step up every year.  This is different from last year’s edition.  I am impressed with the decoration and the whole organization.

In what ways do you think the ball can be improved?

That would be hard to say.  They have really done a good job.  So, I can’t see any fault to criticize.  By the way, I don’t think ENCOMIUM can go more glamorous than this. I just think they should keep up the standard.  That’s my opinion.

What to you is the definition of style?

I think style is a reflection of one’s personality. It’s like internalizing fashion and bringing it out in your own way.  It’s just like your side of a story, that is trying to turn fashion in your own way thereby making it your own.

What is your beauty routine?

I am not flattering when it comes to beauty.  I just do the regular treatment. I make sure I wash off my make up before going to bed. I also tone and moisturize.

What fashion item can you not do without?

I will say it’s my hand bag but maybe now, my Blackberry.

You constantly dress well ahead of your peers, how does it feel?

Thank you for the compliment but there are still a lot of them ahead of me.

What basically informs the way you dress?

I dress according to my mood most of the time. I try to be myself.  I like my outlook to determine what I have inside. It is not about wearing the most expensive things, it is about putting them together to bring out the personality in you.  I have always put myself together, I have always tried to be as comfortable as I can in whatever I put on.  If you are comfortable in what you are wearing, you will be confident of yourself.

What is it you can’t be caught wearing?

I think the way fashion is going, you can wear anything now, to be honest with you.

How come a lot of people love Genevieve Nnaji?

You have to ask them.  I have no idea but for me, I am very grateful for the love and attention I get from fans.  It is because of them I am what I am today.

Let’s talk about your industry, is Nollywood where it should be now?

The Nigerian movie industry is definitely not where it should be, but we are getting there slowly and surely.

You have been nominated for another Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

That’s true, and I feel honoured to be nominated again as Best Actress.  This is actually the third time I am being nominated for the award.

Are you getting married soon, Genevieve?

I look for the reason to get married before the idea.  I am looking for the right person and if I see him, I will get married.

What are the qualities you expect from your would-be husband?

When I see the man, I will know.

Have you ever suffered a heart break?

Everybody should have suffered a heartbreak before.

And when it comes, how do you handle it?

A strong heart.

Maybe this is the time to clear the air on all the noise about Genevieve Nnaji dating D’Banj…

That’s my personal life.  I don’t talk about my personal life no matter if it’s true or not. It is my personal life, I keep it to myself.

But can you date him?

I can date any man that loves me.

So, what is it you like most about D’Banj?

Why do you assume I like him?

The good Lord has been extremely nice to you, so, what more are you expecting from Him?

To succeed in anything I do.
