Glass of wine daily prevents stroke

Those drinking a glass of wine daily were 10 percent less likely to have a common stroke (an ischaemic stroke where a clot cuts off oxygen and blood to the brain, forcing many sufferers to re-learn how to walk and talk). Additional drink up to two glasses a day found by researchers Cambridge and Sweden could cut the risk by 8 percent.

In Britain, more than 150,000 suffer a stroke, of which 85 percent are common stroke. The study which examined 27 studies of 21,000 stroke victims discovered that heavy drinking raises risk of stroke, but little wine consumption get better health by increasing ‘good’ cholesterol.

The study author, Dr. Susanna Larsson, of the Karolinska Institute close to Stockholm, said: “Previous research has found an association between alcohol and lower levels of fibrinogen – a protein which helps the formation of blood clots. While this may explain the association between light to moderate alcohol consumption and lower ischaemic stroke risk, the adverse effect on blood pressure, a major risk factor for stroke, may increase the risk of haemorrhagic stroke and outweigh any potential benefit.”

The analysis, according to BMC Medicine journal, counts one drink as 1.5 units. 125ml daily glass of wine could cut the risk of risk of ischaemic stroke by 10 per cent.  It further stated that alcohol in large amounts increases blood pressure, raising the risk of stroke, and can cause cancer. The study therefore suggests  drinking little amount of glass of wine daily, especially to prevent ischaemic stroke because its benefit outweigh its harm.
