Glo-sponsored African Voices beams rays on new generation artistes

A new set of artistes who are making waves across Africa will be the focus of this week’s African Voices, a magazine programme  of the Cable News Network(CNN) sponsored by telecommunications giant, Globacom.

The programme will be on air at 10.30 a.m. on Friday with repeat editions at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, 12.30 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. on Sunday, while viewers can also keep a date with  the show on Monday at 11:30 p.m. and on Tuesday at5.30 a.m.

CNN explained in a vignette of the show that  the increasing significance of performance artistes on the continent was the reason it made them the focus of the programme. According to the international news network, “Whether they sought the spotlight or fell into it by chance, performers across Africa are daring to bare their souls on stage”.

The programme is billed to  profile three guest celebrities from Cape Town in South Africa, Mozambique and Uganda.  Shannon Glover, the South African,  is the first performance star to be featured. Talking about her career, CNN said, “We will leap into the world of the top South African ballerina to see how her passion for pirouettes has turned into a successful career”.

Born in Durban, she launched her dance training in Johannesburg at the age of four and got awarded her RAD Solo Seal few years after. She was subsequently the winner of the South African RAD Adeline Geneè Silver Trophy and thereafter represented South Africa at the International Ballet Competition in Birmingham, U.K.

Mozambican singer, Deltino Guerreiro, is described as “one dreamer who is using his distinctive voice to do big things.” His songs are a potpourri of emotional sounds and lyrics in different languages (Portuguese, English and Macua) and soothing melodies.

The CNN crew equally travels to New York to encounter Joseph Opio, an Uganda-born comic enigma “whose jokes can be heard every week on one of America’s top news satire shows, the Daily Show.”
