Champion Newspapers said Globacom was honoured for making a significant difference in the telecoms industry in the past year. “The Champion Award was instituted to identify and celebrate those who have effectively utilised any and every opportunity to lead at one level of the other for the good of our people.” The paper observed that Globacom had consistently supported efforts to empower the people Nigeria and accelerate national development.

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, who was Chief Host of the ceremony noted that it was an honour “to host this event meant celebrate some of our country’s best and finest. The kind of services and selflessness the awardees including Chief Sunny Odogwu and Dr Mike Adenuga’s Globacom have continued to render to our country make them deserving of the honour.”

Chairman of the event, House of Representatives Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, said in address read on his behalf by a member of the House, Victor Ogene, commended Champion for recognising those who have contributed remarkably to the development of the country.

The Brand of the Year Award was presented to Globacom by the Director General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation, Sally Mbanefo. Other winners included Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; former Governor of Anambra, Peter Obi; former Commonwealth Secretary General, Emeka Anyaoku; industrialists Aliko Dangote, Oba Otudeko and Leo Stan Eke; Minister of Agriculture, Akinwunmi Adesina; Zenith Bank and Mutual Benefits Assurance.

At the Marketing Edge Awards, organisers said the choice of Globacom as Brand of the Decade followed a painstaking review and assessment of the contribution of telecommunications to the growth and prosperity of the integrated marketing communications industry.

“Among the telecommunications service providers considered, your organisation stood head over shoulders in the crowd. You were unanimously voted as the outstanding telecoms brand in Nigeria’s corporate milieu” the organisers said.

Marketing Edge is Nigeria’s leading brands and marketing publication which has been in operation for over ten years.
According to the publisher of the magazine, Mr. John Ajayi, Marketing Edge “…has served as witness to the fortunes of players and gladiators in the integrated marketing communications industry and positioned the magazine as a valuable source of intelligence on the evolution, growth and development of the industry in Nigeria”,   therefore the paper is well positioned to judge the performance of the players in the telecoms sector.
