GoTV and StarTimes competition gets tougher

The competition between pay TV giants, Star Times and GoTV, is a never ending and very visible competition. Both come up with marketing strategies from time to time to attract subscribers.

Startimes came about five years ago before GoTV and their initial aim was to reduce the market dominance of Multichoice owned DSTV. DSTV has been controlling the cable TV sphere for about two decades. Star Times is owned by NTA Star TV Network LTD, while GoTV is owned by MultiChoice.

Multichoice saw Startimes as a threat as it was really affordable and very easy to be installed, so they introduced GoTV as a cheaper version of DSTV to compete with Startimes and hold their position as the number one digital TV service provider in Nigeria.

The GoTV starter pack which comprises of a decoder, an internal antenna plus one month free subscription is N4,500.  GoTV has just two bouquets, GoTV standard and GoTV Plus, GoTV Standard has over 25 channels with a monthly subscription of N1,200 , while GoTV Plus has over 40 channels with a monthly subscription of N1,800.

The normal Startimes decoder costs N3,390, while the HD Startimes decoder cost N4,390.

Startimes has 4 bouquets, with the Nova bouquet with 28 channels at N600 per month, the Basic bouquet at N1,200 per month with over 35 channels, the Classic bouquet with over 55 channels at N2,400 per month, and the Unique bouquet with over 70 stations at N3,600 per month.

ENCOMIUM Weekly spoke with a couple of television lovers who own either or both payTV decoders on which was more preferred and the reason for their preference.

BOLAJI  SHOBIYE

Do you own a cable TV?

Yes, I own a cable TV. I own the two.

Which do you prefer between Startimes and GoTV?

I prefer the GoTV because they have lots of foreign movies and kiddies’ channels.

I enjoy the service but the only thing is that they repeat some of their movies mostly on Africa Magic.

UCHE JOMBO

Do you own a cable TV?

Yes, I do.

Which do you prefer between Startimes and GoTV?

I have a GoTV. I don’t enjoy their service because it is always one problem or the other. I had stopped using DSTV when it was having power issues and I took it to their office more than two times. So, I bought a GoTV thinking it was better. Sometimes the network just ceases in the middle of an important programme.

Since yesterday, the decoder just went off.  Anytime you put it on it will only show the red light and it would come up.

ISAAC GBENGA

Do you own a cable TV?

I own a cable TV.  I have GoTV.

Which do you prefer between Startimes and GoTV?

I prefer Startimes but I’ve bought GoTV before I realized that Startimes shows free football most especially the World Cup in different categories and still have most of the stations that GoTV has.

I’m not enjoying it because anytime the weather is cloudy, their service will be down. Besides, they have no fresh programmes. Most of the programmes are being rotated almost every week. Permit me also to add that we still need improvement at the rate of our power supply because most times you have the time to enjoy the services you paid for, there won’t be stable power supply.

but Startimes is worse. Normal local TV stations are better off than Startimes. GoTV is just like DSTV with their programmes and GoTV has very interesting programmes lined up. Yoruba movies, sports live, drama, cartoons for kids, music, live events, news, documentary, history, etc.
