Hajj stampede: 717 pilgrims dead, 863 injured

At least 717 pilgrims taking part in this year’s Hajj (in Saudi Arabia) have died following a stampede in Mina and about 863injured. This happened on the first day of Eid al-Adha (Thursday, September 24).

The area, named Street 2014 where the stampede occurred, has been closed. Over 200 ambulances and 4,000 rescue workers have been helping out with rescue effort.

Muslim faithful go to Mina to throw stones at pillars representing the devil.

About two million pilgrims are currently observing Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
