Hardship multiplies, Nigerians weep

‘We spend more on fuel than food’ – compatriots moan

The incessant fuel scarcity and the attendant hike in pump price has brought untold hardship to Nigerian homes. Now, the average household spends more on fueling their generators, cars than on food. This much they revealed to ENCOMIUM Weekly when our reporters engaged them on this question, ‘Do you spend more money on fuel than food?’
They bared their hearts as they recapped their ordeal in fueling their generators, cars as the power companies fail in their duty.

ADADAYO OLUWASEUN
No, I don’t spend more on fuel than food. To me, food is very essential. Before electricity was brought to Nigeria, our grandfathers lived a good life. If I see awoof money, I’ll buy fuel, but if not, I won’t give myself unnecessary headache. Not even now that food stuff is costly.

ADEWUSI ELIZABETH
I spend more money on fuel than food. I run a business centre and to keep my business in place. I have to be on generator when there is no light. That is the only way to keep and satisfy my customers.

SHITTU DAMOLA
Yes, I spend more on fuel than food and the reason is because of the nature of my business. I sell frozen foods. Even before the fuel scarcity, anytime there is no power supply, I would be on generator. I’m used to spending so much money on fuel to sustain my business. The only difference and the main problem is the fuel scarcity.

OWOTUTU FOLASHADE
I don’t spend more on fuel than food. I’m a fashion designer, but thank God light has been stable at my shop area. I don’t usually work late but if I have to, its only on few occasions that I’ll need to put on the generator.

PATRICK
I have always spent more on fuel than food. I am an okada man and it is fuel that helps to sustain me. But the ongoing scarcity made my demand for it to be high. I spend double, if not triple of the amount I used to buy now.

ADEDOLA ADEWUNMI
Yes, I spend more on fuel than food. I own a provision shop and I also sell soft drinks, youghurt, sachet water, table water and juice. You know, people like them cold though there had been light, it’s not stable. So, I have to support it with generator. Most times, I am on generator in the night when there is no light.

OLATUNDE
I have a three week old baby who would not sleep if there is no fan blowing. To avoid this, I fuel my generator all the time, so I can be on it when they take light and that actually makes me to spend more on fuel than food.

MR. DANIEL ONJEH
I spend more on food than fuel. This is because I cannot do without eating but I can do without light even I can sleep without putting on my generator. This is because the situation in this country is enormous, that I cannot get fuel and sleep hungry, no.

MR. JONAH OGBE
I really spend a lot trying to facilitate my business. I am into business and as a matter of fact, I make do with light and there is fuel scarcity, I spend about N50,000 to fuel whereas N30,000 to buy food in the house.

MADAM JOY
It is amazing that I spend a lot of money on fuel than food because of the scarcity of fuel. I tend to buy close to N5,000 fuel for two days because of the nature of my business.

MRS. BOLU
I do not have anybody helping me, so I tend to fend for my children. Since there is hike in fuel, I just try to concentrate on the food stuff I purchase for my family. So, I spend more money on food.

MR. BAYO
My children don’t sleep without light and as a matter of fact, I tend to make available fuel to the detriment of my pocket. I spend a lot trying to fuel my generator and my keke because I am a keke operator. A lot of money go to fuel than food.

MRS. MERCY OKI
I spend less on fuel because of the scarcity and the hike, I only try to provide for my children with food, clothings and shelter.

MR. JOHN KENNEDY
I spend more on food than fuel because my family cannot afford to be hungry. Food is the basic need we human beings need but then, if you have the resources for both, fine.

BARR. JAMES OGAH
It is vice versa, this time around, but when the is not available, the available becomes the preferred. This time, I struggle to get both food and fuel at the normal price but once I notice that there is change in the price of fuel, I will adjust my normal spending on food to purchase fuel.

MR. BADMUS KOLAWOLE
I spend more on fuel. It’s frustrating these days, I spend about half of my income on fuel for my car and generator.

MR. AINA
Nigeria today, for efficient transformation from home to office, you just have to spend more on fuel. This morning I haven’t eaten but I have already bought N3,000 fuel in my car. I’m upset.

BABALOLA ALAO
The amount I spend on food is less compared to that on petrol. In a week I spend up to N15,000 on fuel. It’s really annoying.

PETER OMONIYI
The situation is pathetic. I spend really more on fuel than food. Most of the time, I spend above the budgeted amount for fuel all because it is expensive all over the country, government should help us out.

ADEOLA OWOSENI
Yes, I spend really more on petrol. Its mind buggling. How can a litre of petrol be sold for N140. I think the government needs to help us out.

FALANA KEHINDE
To survive in Nigeria today as a government worker who owns a car and generator, you just have to spend more on fuel. So, I spend really much on fuel nowadays.

MR. OPODEYI
I don’t think I spend more money on fuel than food, because we eat every day. If I like I will not buy fuel but I can’t say I will not eat food a day. So, I spend more on food than fuel.

MR. HASSAN
I spend money on fuel than food. How much food do I eat per day? N1,000 both for fuel. I spend almost N3,000 per day.

MRS. TIJANI
It is very annoying, I always quarrel with my husband on that. We spend more on fuel than food.

MR. SODIQ
I spend more on food than fuel maybe, because I don’t have car and I don’t buy fuel for my generator every day.

MR. SAMSON
That is Nigeria for you, assuming there is 24 hours power supply/ are we still going to be spend more money on fuel than food?

MRS. KIKELOMO
My dad spends more money on fuel than food because he will buy for his car and generator every day. He spends at least N3,000, can you imagine? That is Nigeria for you.

MR. TAIWO
What I spend on food is less compared to that of fuel. It is very annoying but I don’t have a choice or let me say I don’t have any alternative.

MR. BUSARI
I spend more on food than fuel because I don’t have a car and I don’t fuel my generator everyday but I eat every day.
