Has Boko Haram been technically defeated?

Recent events are going someway to debunk President Muhammadu Buhari’s assertion that insurgent sect, Boko Haram have been ‘technically’ defeated.

Speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in December, Buhari had revealed how the military have restricted the terrorists to fighting with Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs) and mostly limited their force to the center of Borno state.

His words, “Articulated conventional attacks on centres of communication and populations, they are no longer capable of doing that effectively. Adding, “So, I think, technically we have won the war because people are going back into their neighbourhoods. Boko Haram as an organized fighting force, I assure you, that we have dealt with them.”

However, the extremists, though do not hold any territory currently, are still striking the heart of the country’s northeast in attacks since the President’s declaration of “technical” victory.
