Hong Kong protest: Thousands take part in vigil of lights to defy Chinese authorities

Thousands of democracy demonstrators took to the streets to take part in a protest of lights yesterday (September 29) night, in defiance of Chinese authorities in Hong Kong.

The protesters waved mobile phones, sang and danced as riot police stayed away from the central Admiralty district.

An estimated 80,000 people, mostly students, have flooded the streets since the protests broke out on Friday (September 27) night. They are demanding full democracy and have called on the city’s leader – Leung Chun-ying – to step down.
